mod 12 ???

    I am looking at a 2 pin milled rib that is said to be in 95% condition both wood and blue---The pic showes good blue but looks somwhat dull---He claims that that was the way they were in the early days---Later mdls were blued more shiny---Is that right???thanks

    George.....The original blue finish on Mod 12's was rust blue. Rust blue is actually a mild acid and etches the surface of the steel and gives it somewhat of a satin finish. In 1938 Winchester started using Du-Lite as it was much faster to complete than rust blue. With Du-Lite the metal is polished and then dipped into the hot salt solution which deposits the blue finish on the steel. The solid rib barrels were all rust blued because of the soldered on rib. Most of the milled rib barrels were rust blued but some may have been Du-Lite. Depending on the date of manufacture your receiver could have been rust blued or Du-Lite if made after 1938.

    Rebsmith is right.
    I have a 1955 2pin trap that has a lot brighter finish than another shooters M-12 at our club.
    His is a pre-war standard trap w/ 2 pin rib.
