A hearty thanks and congratulations to the Monticello Sportsmen Club in Monticello, MN, for an incredible weekend of shooting. The targets were excellent, food second to none (you've got to try the homemade fries with sausage gravy, cheese sauce and ketchup--my favourite!) and your staff and volunteers worked their tails off to keep things moving.

You know it's a good day when 100's are being registered in singles. Congratulations to 1st time ATA 100 straights to Mariah Michaelis (Monticello), Krysta Miller (Hibbing), Nik Fetzik (Hibbing), Kyle Riihinen (Hibbing), & Tyler Veches (Buffalo)! There is nothing more exciting than seeing youth shooters hit this benchmark. Not to be outdone, Junior Tony Friesen (Detroit Lakes) ran all 200 in Saturday's singles. It really was a day for youth trapshooting.

Experiencing a strong case of 2009 State Shoot Singles deja vu was Coach Mark Stevens, who tied three other shooters in the 2010 MN Northern Zone Saturday's singles for 200 straight. Randy Jones (Elk River) took Class A honours outright, leaving Tony Friesen (DL), Jim Hessler (Buffalo), and Coach to shoot off for Class AA. This time Coach was able to keep smoking targets for the win--congratulations to all shooters and especially to you, Coach! You are a great example of the adage "Those who can, TEACH!"

Windy conditions and cloud cover made the handicap championship challenging for most shooters but not Troy Haverly (New London) and Keith Koosman (Princeton) who both scored an amazing 97. Windier shoot off conditions found Troy Haverly to take the championship spot over Keith by one bird. Congratulations to both and we look forward to a rematch at State!

Doubles were wild and wonderful, and who better to show us that weather means nothing than Minnesota Doubles Boy Eric Munson, who shot a 98 to take the Class AA win. It was fun to see the kids who weren't even shooting doubles stick around just to watch his squad shoot.

If you haven't ever shot at Monticello Sportsmen Club, make sure to attend one of their upcoming two ATA registered shoots--their Mini-Grand is a blast (July 31-Aug 1) and they have another event August 21-22. The conditions are excellent, the surroundings beautiful and the Michaelis family bends over backwards to keep shooters happy.

Here's some pictures from this weekend. Forgive the fact that they're mostly kids--can you tell how important I think youth shooters are? In fact, don't tell Coach, but I don't have a single photo of him from this weekend!
