Check for linkage bind up, the column has a return spring along with the cylinder. To check hydraulic cylinder remove clevis screw that secures it to press linkage and cycle cylinder to see if it immediately telescopes back out once it retracts.

The spring inside the hyd cylinder is probably broken into a half dozen pieces. I've had it happen twice. The springs are cheap and not difficult to replace.

Chugiak is probably right; I have four hydraulic presses and the resizing fingers and collet have to be clean and lubed or it will bind the press from returning to the top, or give a bad clunk sound as it is rising.

Mine did the same thing, I replace the footcontol o-rings 3 of them, very easy
to do. just take out bolt, it all pulls out easy. You can get the oring kit from mec for about $6 bucks or go to auto store look in o-ring kit get the 3 you need for $1.25
