I think it will happen someday in the not too distant future, so why shouldn't the ATA make the use of steel shot mandatory? It's far far better for the environment, safer and could become much cheaper to produce!

This way, everyone would be on a even playing field and perhaps people wouldn't even notice the change after a few short years.

Any comments??

Have you been sniffing the glue in your shop? The lead we shoot at Trap ranges is not harming our environment.

Tron, wait... wait... Wait... Don't make the common mistake of setting the hooks before you actually feel the "largemouth" pulling the "spook" under the water. Actually, why not a titanium silicone alloy? Hard, firm, and nicely formed??? Rick Gibbs

"The lead we shoot at Trap ranges is not harming our environment."

Try convincing the Environmental Biologists that are employed by the state you live in that your statement is a fact. Good luck. They have closed a club in this state for lead pollution. They produced water sample results that show extremely elevated lead in the water(the shot fall zone drops partially into a wetlands area.

Brian you are so very correct and from what I am reading and seeing reports on much sooner than you think.

Tell all of us again what that white stuff is that grows on lead......Don't blame for it, I didn't design the stuff.....Y'all better have a plan.
The rest of the world could care less if we shoot trap......being ignorant about it... ain't gonna help.

I don't like what's going on any more than the next guy.....but....sooner or later someones going to say.....y'all had plenty of warning.

I wish I wasn't right on this one, Bob. I shoot blackpowder cartridges, some in antique rifles. That means their bores are too soft of steel for jacketed bullets. If lead is banned, these become wall hangers.

I've been saying this for years... once the "politically incorrect" guns have been gone after, that leaves only the "politically correct" guns to ban or render useless.

What do you have to do to convert a shotgun to steel?

What do you have to do to convert a shotgun to steel?

Not much actually, however there are some 'dependings' involved.

Modern guns (read: 70s and later) all have barrels that won't be scored by a steel pellet trapped between a wad and hull. If you are shooting a CT gun, you buy 'steel-capable' tubes and find your sweet combo.

Modern wads and small (#7) shot don't peen/stretch (modern) fixed chokes, but the patterns are not usually the same as lead.

I hope Joe Kuhn chimes in. Naperville is steel-only and he knows the steel drill from A to Z.

There are some reloading quirks, mostly using different wads, and paying REAL close attention to recipes, for steel WILL get pressury & right.now.
