This redistributes the burden of use and the health care burden somewhat--- many other countries do this

The years of smokers telling non smokers to shut up stupid are over

    Aprice

There isnt enough profit in it to create a black market- so many other items like drugs are so much smaller and more lucrative.

PS note Aprice in his investigator uniform for Walmart- tying to sniff out who is smuggling tobacco-- on his computer he has it titled aprice_2009_151092-- I think he won an award for some mayday celebration of best dressed older investigators or something

Aprice- on your "little" scale you might think you have some evidence--- but really where do you expect this large scale smuggling operation to originate from? Where is it going to go?

Yours is another conspiracy theory gone amuck

So all smokers in America are going to be part of this huh? so the federal govt wont get tax revenue it needs to apply to their health care

    Right

Rick well if people quit smoking then the health care costs will drop for everyone so that is even better then getting the tax

As far as people making 2000 mile one way trips to the nearest Indian Reservation-- I dont think so

Also have you ever been on an Indian Reservation? Who is going to go there to buy something ?

As far as what the Indians pay- that will go up also-- it is supply and demand and transportation costs. As fewer packages are made- the cost has to go up because all parts of the operation will cost the manufacturer more per pack

    It obviously will work

    Regards from Iowa

Rick- I think you are the bigot- I made no comment about Indians and in fact I think it is shameful what we did by putting them in such hell holes

Regardless- why would anyone travel to such places to buy cigarettes even if they were closer than 2000 miles one way?

You are also wrong about health care costs-- sure there is a tail end but as people quit smoking those costs will decrease in huge proportions

Some estimates indicate that health care costs related to smoking might have accounted for as much as 1/3 of a nations health care costs across the board when you include second hand smoke

Rick- did you not learn anything from what I posted?

People giving up smoking is better than the increased tax

I just dont agreee with Inspector Prices conspiracy theory about smuggling or the theory that everyone will go to Indian reservations to obtain their product

Rick- I know you have little life experience but of the 15 million people in the NYC greater basin area-- How many of these do you claim have gone to an Indian Reservation in the middle of NY State to purchase their smokes

Your little world and Aprices smuggling world are not reality

Well Rick the non smoking public has been subsidizing health care for smokers for 150 years--- so what is your point?

Either tax them to cover part of the cost or charge them enough that they will quit

Or are you just going to let them die agonizing deaths on public sidewalks coughing blood and gasping for breath?

    Regards from Iowa

Rick no it didnt have to be a big deal for the state for file a lawsuit even though I know you imagine each of those 15 million NYC area residents making weekly pigrimages to those indian reservations to save a dollar a pack on their smokes

    Get some perspective

This is a good tax increase whether it generates revenues or results in people quitting smoking

Well in Argentina they banned smoking in public--

Maybe that is a good step

Why do smokers think at entrances to buildings or walking around they should be able to subject innocent third parties to second hand smoke

Who do smokers expect pick up all the butts they throw on the ground? Maybe that would be a good job for Aprice- who knows- it would keep him busy at least

    Regards from Iowa

If the end result is no more smoking then tobacco facilities and all the people associated with manufacturing will be out of jobs. Were talking hundreds of thousands of people. Not good

Haskins Bill, You said it very well and you are right on about the states stealing the tobacco settlement monies for their "pet projects". I hope the moderator leaves your post as written. There is no more swearing on your post than what you hear in the Northern states at any Mall or any public sidewalk. Gene 777 is out of touch with Indian Reservations around this area. I know many who drive the 50-75 miles to "load up" on cigarettes for themselves and friends.
Canada tried this very high tax idea about 15 years ago and gave up when they started losing money because there was so much boot-legging. Thousands of cartons went across Lakes Ontario and Erie in the dark of night. Many years ago, some IDIOT got stopped for speeding on the NYS thruway. He was driving a box van and when the troopers looked inside it they found over 50K in cigarettes. (go to jail,do not pass go). Larry

Cigarettes are 15 to 2o bucks a carton cheaper in Missouri than they are in Iowa. Don't ask me how I know this. Some for booze and chewing tobacco. Could be a very lucrative business if so inclined.

A good way for state, local and federal governments to raise needed tax revenues is to charge a filing fee and issue a license to any would be politician wanting to run for any office, but only after an extensive back ground check. ed nichols

Damn, talk about stuck on stupid! Guys, marijuana trafficking is ALREADY a tobacco smuggling enterprise.

Second, this is the most regressive TAX yet, to come from the Ubama regime. Minorities are the largest segment of tobacco users. This tax hits the low income voters the hardest.

Third, I predict that when commercial tobacco sales drops, and it will, that marijuana use will skyrocket. Add this stupid idea to legalized weed, and illegal immigrant harvesting and the DNC will finally get the zombies they have been working toward.

What do you think that 30 million new drug abusers will do to your health care costs?

    Can you say 'unintended consequences'?

Most of the non-taxpayers are in the 51% of the have-nots that voted for Obammy. And the vast majority of all cigarette smokers are in that 51%. What better way to get some money out of those voters?

According to the extensive research in the posted link ^, increasing the cost of the product reduces the number of users.

I say tax the chit out of them. There is not a more disgusting habit to have. Smokers are not only subjecting themselves to a slow death, they are doing the same to the people around them.

Its not against the law to smoke in this country, if someone wants to smoke its his right and not your right to take it away from him. I'm not a smoker but rights are rights.

548 you are a socialist. It's people like you that give away our freedoms everyday and don't care. Tax this tax that because I don't like it. They should tax you for taking every breath of air. Why don't you move to Europe or better yet Iran.

thunder, it's not a smoker's right to reduce the lifespan of people around them. ie. waitresses and so on
