My wife and I went to the Griffith Park Observatory (in Los Angeles) last weekend. In the main entrance they have Foucault pendulum that proves the Earth rotates.

As it swings, it appears to move clockwise and knock over pins, but what's really happening is the Earth is spinning underneath it.

A physicist gave the demonstration, and afterwards I went to talk to him.

He told me about "angle of deflection" and showed me charts. We talked about how it would react at the North Pole, but since LA is 43 degrees different, and the Earth is round, you need to consider the Coriolis effect.

He showed me a graph that they term "the Taco Shell" due to the actual path, the theoretical path, and the deflection (it looks like a taco shell).

Afterwards my wife asked me if I understood any of that. I replied, sure, let's get Mexican food for lunch.

    I be dumb.

Here's what I don't get. Scientists are smart, right? And they KNOW all this stuff. What they KNOW is constantly being proven wrong by the same people who KNOW it, and what they KNOW is constantly changing and being replaced, but they are smart and we are dumb.

They have one of those pendulums at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

We took the kids there and they were absolutely fascinated watching it.

    (me too)

Thanks! I now have another reason for missing.

Now I know why I missed that target when I thought I was dead on it!

It has something to do with the earth's rotation.

Now I'll break that target next time..........If I remember to include that deduction when I'm getting ready to shoot. ;)

    >>It is not a force but an effect of deflection due to Earth rotating upon its axis.

It's all Greek to me :)

    or

It's all geek to me :)

    You pick.

They have one at the Boston Museum of Science and have had it for 60+ years. A very popular attraction. While you are at it say a prayer for Boston.
