    Excerpt:

LIMERICK -- Machine guns may be coming to a nuclear plant near you.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has proposed a rule that would allow security guards to wield machine guns and "enhanced weapons" to guard spent fuel rods being stored at nuclear power plants.

My question is what is an "enhanced weapon"? Would that be 20mm. Gatling Guns, 105 Howitzers, Mortars, all of the above (and more)?

I'm told that they've had them at the nearby nuke plant for years. More power to 'em.

I can't fathom how they don't already have them, considering the taxes most of us pay.

Machine pistols and M16's are standard weapons at Knolls Atomic Power Lab
and I'll guess they are standard issue at Kesselring too.
Security folks even wore paramilitary black uniforms. They look silly.

    Old news.

I worked in a Nuke powerstation in Wisconsin in the late 80's there were well trained rifle carrying security guards.

My buddy makes a mint renting his range out for those guys to qualify. They also leave 30 gallon trash bins full of once fired 5.56/223 brass behind when they leave, and all the lead which gets mined out of the backstop. They keep him very busy for a few weeks every year or so (maybe more often than that, don't recall).
