May seem like a dumb question to some but,
is the safety button on an MX8 only for releasing
the drop-out trigger, or is it supposed to operate
as a safety also? Was going to use mine for dove hunting
and discovered the safety did not work as a safety.
Could not slide it back into what would mormally be
    the safe position. Fred

all way back is unsafe, next stop safe and all the way forward releases the trigger.

If it is a target gun that you bought used, perhaps the original owner has blocked it from moving backwards into the "safe" position by installing a roll pin. You can remove the stock and take a look to see if this is the case and it is quite easy to remove.

Thanks for the replys guys. It is an MX8 Special type 4 O/U
that I use for doubles.I bought it used a few years ago. Guess I
will have to remove the stock and look to see if it is pinned.
If it was made as a usable saftey I would like to have it that
    way. Fred
