.Arizona illegal immigration, 'birther' bills show rightward shift
    – Even by the measure of Arizona's long history of conservatism, the past week has been extraordinary.

In the past six days, the legislature has passed the nation's strictest anti-illegal immigration bill, a law permitting concealed weapons, and the House has approved a bill requiring a presidential candidate to show his or her birth certificate to appear on the state ballot.

The last bill, which now must pass the Senate, was a clear nod to the birther movement, which claims that President Obama was not born in the US.

This is the home of five-term Sen. Barry Goldwater, known as "Mr Conservative" – the politician most often credited for sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s. But a confluence of factors, ranging from the rising pitch of the illegal immigration debate to the departure of a Democratic governor and her replacement by a Republican has tilted Arizona even further to the right.

"They had a Democratic governor, and when she left, that completely changed the political calculus," says Matthew Kerbel, a professor of political science at Villanova University. Now the legislative and executive branches are of the same party, he says.

"We are seeing this state deal with that list of issues which reflect what the national Republican party's most animated portion of voters is after," says Mr. Kerbel. Like-minded people are attracted to the political fight and move residence to join in, he and others say.

It is this migration that has served to amplify Arizona's conservative leanings in recent years.

"The truth is that Arizona has been a state with far-right politics going back many years, but in [the] last weeks and months is an even more remarkable lurch to right," says Mark Potok, Director of the intelligence project for the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups. "You've got a lot of whites moving into the state who are not from there, and who seem to feel this is a white man's state, and who don't like it when they find more diversity than they expected."

The recent high-profile murder of a rancher – with tracks leading back to Mexico – has inflamed anti-immigration sentiment.

Immigrant activist Kat Rodriguez moved to Arizona in 2000 and says even she, a Texan, is stunned by Arizona's shift to the right.

"For the last five to seven years, this state seems to have been attracting the xenophobic and evenly openly racist groups of people,"says the Tucson-based coordinator for Derechos Humanos.

The deeper problem, say some, is that the drawing of state legislative districts empowers the extremes of the political right.

"The biggest driver of this from my perspective is that Arizona districts are currently drawn so that they are not competitive," says Farrell Quinlan, spokesman for the National Federation of Independent Business, which represents small business owners. Only 20 percent of both parties show up for primaries, so candidates have to appeal to the most faithful and ideologically pure, he says. "The districts are set up in ways that push politicians to the most irreconcilable positions – that filters down to the kinds of laws that you have coming out of here right now," says Quinlan.

For others, though, it is the latest incarnation of a way of life that has deep roots in the old "wild, wild west."

"Arizona has always had a contrarian, cantankerous streak," says Jack Pitney, a political scientist at Claremont McKenna College

The Immagration bill is on Gov. Brewers desk and if she wants to remain Governor she knows she better sign it or at least not Veto it so it becomes law anyway ... They have people (?) camped out at the Capital Building as a sign of protest, they came from Los Angeles just to show support to those who do not want the Governor to sign the SB 1070 into law ... I wonder what the protestors from California have to do with the State of Arizona and what do they care about our laws ..? Maybe they are scared that once we get it right someone over there will wake up and start to push for the same type of laws and that would decrease the population of the State considerably ... The United States of America need the same type of Immagration laws and strict enforcement of same, which eliminates Janet Naploitano as Head of Homieland Security because she never did anything when she was the Gov. (Democrate) of the State of Arizona ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Wait til you read Obama's comments on this bill. He is really out of contact with the "main stream" of this country. The sooner he goes the better. We had all better make sure 2010 sends a message and keep shouting the message through 2012.

Governor Brewer has contacted the White House on at least 5 occasions trying to get additional funding for Border Containment, she has been ignored and that might just cause her to sign the bill rather than let it go though without her signature on it ... The Washington Administration (Obama) don't see any problem with Illegals crossing into this country by the dark of night, probably the same way he got in ...

The Birthier Bill is another one Obama thinks is out of place but if it was in place back then he probably wouldn't of been able to run let alone get elected ...

Personally, I think they should start checking ID's of those protestor's and arrest the ones from any other State as well as the Illegals who are in the midst of it ... Surprise, Surprise and go from there ... Welcome to Arizona ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Now that the Gov. has signed the bill, will Obama travel to Arizona?

When illegals come here it is for the same reason Obama came here and that is for someone else to take care of them. They then expect rights and medical care just like Hussein has rammed down our throats. The pattern has become all to apparent the last 15 months. A nanny state breeds more votes for the leaches on society and we have too many in the government that like their votes so they keep promting that lifestyle. I have said for several years when mainstream America wakes up the gravy train will cease and the libs will be forced to actually work for a living. Being a productive member of society does not sit well with the lib leaches. Obama has NEVER been a producing member of society so he sees no problem giving the rest of this country to illegals.

The Governor signed the SB.1070 bill this afternoon and the crowds went wild, the protestors showed good reason for all of them to be arrested and removed from the area around the Capital Building and State from my observation ... They called out the Riot Squads but never got to let them do their thing, but got very close ... Now, they have to eliminate Rick Romley who was just appointed States Attorney by the Board to finish the term of the elected official (Andrew Thomas) who resigned to run for Governor ... The State of Arizona is headed in the right direction now if they can only keep it up and build some momemtum ...
The movement has to Start someplace, Arizona is as good as any place else ... Hope more States will follow and show Obama he is losing his grip and people are waking up ... Time will tell ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Too bad it can't bring back a dead rancher.

They should pick up all the illegals they can find and give them to Sherrif Joe for administration of his tender mercies.

Looks like the people of Arizona have gotten it right. The sooner the rest of this country replicates their new immigration laws, the sooner these parasites will realize that they are no longer welcome in this country. I lived in Laredo, Texas twenty five years ago and saw how all these schemes worked. Pregnant illegal is smuggled into the colonias (public housing), goes into labor, goes to Mercy Hospital where a new U.S. citizen is born at taxpayer expense. Next stop the Welfare Office.

Good to hear that people are finally seeing our esteemed Commander in Chief and his socialist cronies for what they are; nothing but a bunch of oily hoodlums whose only goal is to turn this country into a third world state.

November is not that far away. The easiest way for us to stop this administration's designs on our money, morals, education, ets. is to vote them out of office, replace them with straight talking, straight thinking conservaties and cripple any further socialist ambitions by having the numbers to kill it before it even gets to the House floor.

The time to buy is now because the prices are at an all time low because the banks are holding a lot of the propertys that have been foreclosed on or would of been had they not been turned back to the mortgage holders ... There will probably be a bunch of pink, blue, rust, and yellow colored homes for sale once Sheriff Joe starts the sweep and the Illegals are forced to vacate them and head for parts unknown ...

Its truly amazing that with the amount of open carry weapons and not one person got shot, much less killed yesterday with all of the rioting and protesting going on at the Capital Building ... What happened to the Wild, Wild, West and all of the killing the lefties were worried about when the CCW law was repealed last week ..?

I have my doubts that Obama will be visiting anytime soon, thats a good thing ... Now, we have to give McCain his walking papers and get someone in his seat that wants to get rid of the Illegals also and eliminate the amnesty that McCain is always talking about ... McCain is long past due his time as Senator and has to be gone ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

The passage of HB.1070 opened the door for Sheriff Joe to take back the streets in Maricopa County, State of Arizona ... The next few weeks ought to be entertaining as well as enlightening to watch the raids and protestors and rioters get what they have coming also ... I guess people just do not understand that laws are in place and just have not been enforced to the letter which is what will hopefully happen from now on ... The State has a few too many Liberals in elected offices to force the issues without some degree of resistance from within from the local politicians themself ... The up coming elections should prove interesting when the resistors get their walking papers along with John McCain who is a Lib in a Republican suit ... The Latino's who are in elected positions closed their offices because they say there were death threats, wonder why ..? The free rides are over for the Illegals and Politicians who are against enforcement of the State of Arizona's laws coming the next election, its about time ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

THIS IS THE VERY AUTHORITY OF IMPEACHMENT.
Their is only two things the president is supposed protect. No. 1 is the american dollar.

No. 2 Protect the american citizen. He has and is trying to destroy both.

For something as simple as a birth certificate it sure as hell like pulling teeth just to see it.

Two things should be done. #1 Give 30 days to provide a certified document as to place of birth.

#2. If after 30 days their is no proof the their should be a national stop, shutdown day across the whole country for 24 hrs. Nothing moves except ambulance and hospital.
#3 Wait 7 days if no proof then shutdown for 48 hrs. nothing moves. NO planes, trucks, cars, industry of anykind.
After all of no revenue going into the coffers what makes the differents nobody has any money anyway. I sure Barry Obama will come up with some.

Once this bill overcomes all the legal battles that will ensue, it'll be a cascade effect to neighboring states. I'm sure Sherrif Joe won't hesitate trying this new law out.

Those states that don't pass similar legislation will be overwhelmed by illegals and will eventually be forced to do something or go bankrupt taking care of them.

Now, we just need to have the military watch over our borders with shoot to kill orders and their won't be a problem with illegal aliens. Just think of all the training that could be accomplished while protecting our borders.
