Does anyone have any suggestions for reloading Federal Topgun hulls? I normally use Clays or Solo 1000 powder for my AA and STS reloads, along with WAA12SL wads and one oz. of 8's or 7 1/2's. I usually load for around 1150 to 1200 FPS.

If you have any recipe's for a light load, please let me know. Thanks!

Here's what I use almost exclusively:

    Top Gun (or Estate) Hull

    17 grs. of IMR 700X

    12S0 wad

    1 oz of 8 (or 7-1/2)

    209A primer

    1200 fps and soft.

The only PUBLISHED one ounce loads I've ever found for Top Gun type hulls is from Alliant. They use a bunch of Red Dot or Green Dot and have a velocity of 1290 fps. They can be found in Alliant manuals until at least 2004 but not in their most recent hard copy manual or their online data.

Everything else published is 1 1/8 oz. Most of that is for three dram heavies at 1200 or greater fps. However, Alliant does have a few recipes for 1 1/8 oz. at 1145 fps.

Accurate Arms currently lists no data for Top Guns. I don't have much older data from Accurate but what little I have doesn't include Top Gun loads.

Let me know if you're interested in any of the Alliant data. I'll send it via private message.

Just loaded a hundred rounds using once fired Estate hulls w/ 1 1/8oz #8,
Wolf Primers, 18gr. Claydot, DRF3-12 wads. This is a favorite load then I pitch the hulls.

18.2 grains of Red Dot or Promo, Federal 12S0 wad or Claybuster clone, Federal 209A primer or Rio 600, 1oz of decent shot gives about 1200 fps over my chronograph. 18.7 grains of Red Dot or Promo, Federal 12S3 wad, Claybuster or Downrange clone, Federal 209A or Rio primer, 1 1/8 oz of decent shot gives around 1200 fps over my Chrono. These loads have been tested at fairly cold temps and have given good results. The Downrange clone of the 12S3 works pretty well. All pattern testing was decent for all of these loads. The Federal wads seemed to be marginally better, but the 12S3 and the Downrange DRF8 seemed about equal. Testing was done at different times, so the results were within a reasonable margin of error, considering only ten samples were fired of each load. I don't have pressure data for these loads, but data for higher velocity loads using the same components were well within limits, so I'd expect these to be under 9500 psi.

Any load for a Federal GM or a Federal paper hull will work in the Top Gun.

    Fiocchi target loads work too.
