I would like to get some thoughts on loads for shooting doubles,.... I have ben shooting 1 1/8 @ 1145 for both shots,..... seems to work well ... some of the time,.... I notice a lot of shooters use two different shells,... What would the normal be ??

Seriously, whatever you use for singles should work fine for both shots of doubles.

Try dropping your first shot to 1 oz. Less recoil = faster recovery and smoother move to the second target. Good luck.

1 shell.. 1 load.. Don't have something else to think about.. I think 18 grains of Promo in a Federal hull.. with a CB4100 or DRXXL would be about perfect with 1 oz of #8's.. Soft shooting too..

    .

Have heard some shoot 1-oz loads for both targets in doubles.

One-ounce for the first barrel for low recoil.

One-ounce for the second barrel since 1-oz is sufficient.

I use 1 1/8 of 7 1/2 moving about 1125-1130 for the first shot, and my singles shl @ 1150 for the second shot. This took me from D to B class this year.

I use 1 type of reload for both shots, saves on reloading time and removes any confusion while on the line, packing your vehicle, etc., etc.

1 oz. of hard shot (7-1/2 or 8), Federal hull, 12S0 wad, 209A primer and 17 grs. of IMR 700X powder. Published speed is 1200 fps.

Very little felt recoil with plenty of speed for the 2nd bird. I also use this recipe for singles with very good results.

I normally use 1 oz #8 @ 1180 fps in a green hull for the 1st shot/1 1/8 oz #8 @ 1200 fps in a gold hull for the 2nd when I'm shooting reloads which is MOST of the time. That said, .........1 1/8 oz @ 1145 fps for both will work as well. The two reloads that I use also just happen to be my singles/handicap loads so using the same loads for doubles simplifies things.

I just started shooting featherlight 7/8 oz, 13.5 Gr. WINAALITE, @1100FPS for the first shot on doubles. Seems to break them just fine and has the recoil of a 410. GaryL.

I've tried 7/8oz 8 1/2s for the first with 1oz 8 or 1 1/8oz 8 for the second, 1oz 8 for both, 1oz 8 first 1 1/8 oz 8 second and 1 1/8 8 @1145 for both and the best and most consistent scores for me have been 1oz 8 @1150 or 1 1/8 8@ 1145 for both. After many many years of being beaten up by recoil I am becoming a recoil wuss so I prefer the 1oz load. Your 1 1/8 @1145 for both will work great as well. As mentioned above there is the added benefit of less rummaging around and worry about getting the right load in the right hole.
