I have the opportunity to buy an older mint LH Rem. 1100 Magnum for a good price but my question is this. I plan on using it for hunting purposes but I RARELY shoot 3" shells. Will the Magnum model function with heavier 2 3/4" hunting loads?

Probably most of the time. You can always put a 2 3/4" barrel on the gun and shoot any load with it.

There is no piston that can be changed on an 1100 barrel. The barrel and gas system are one part. There are 2 gas ports on a standard barrel and only 1 on a magnum barrel. That's the only difference.
