I am looking for opinions on Rio's,Estate's and Gun Club's...which one has the least felt recoil? I know there will be lots of different answers, but
    perhaps a concensus will evolve.

Since I had a custom fit stock made for myself, I really cannot tell the difference between any brand of the same given loading, they all feel the same.

You bet Rio's are less. Run them across a good chronograph and it will tell you why.

It depends on what load you buy... Or load into the hull for that matter. I like gun clubs the best because you can find data for them anywhere, and they range from some super light recoiling 3/4 oz loads to heavy recoiling 1 1/4 oz loads at 1400 fps. -Aaron Schneider

I think you have to be very specific with the DRAMS and OZ of shot for any of these brands to make a valid comparison. For instance, the least felt recoil I have ever shot is the Winchester Low Recoil Low Noise shotshell. It was very light and slow. Threw my timing off.

So I think you cannot just name a Brand like RIO or Estate or Gun Club... you have to be more specific and compare apples to apples.

I was under the impression the lighter the payload and slower the velocity combined the lighter the recoil.

    Grntitan,

Thought it was all related to pressures ;-)

    BigM,

I wasn't so great in physics. Is it ½ mv²?

From my experience Estate has the least felt recoil, and then Gun Club

As has been said, felt recoil, given the same load in different guns, will be a function of gun fit, and how quickly the total energy is delivered to the body.

Automatics spread it out, break open guns do not.

As to shells, it is the same process: how quickly do the pressures build as the powder burns. If it is quick, then you feel a jolt (red dot) if it is slow, you feel less (green dot).

Of course, the weight of the shot load and design of the hull affect pressures and therefore felt recoil.

I doubt you could really tell a difference in recoil if the payload and MV of each shell brand were the same. No free rides on this one.

But if you are looking to cut recoil then cut the payload weight and/or the MV. I know Estate and Rios can both be had in 1 Oz x 2 3/4 dram loadings and those shells are pretty soft shooting.

    You can fell the difference?
