Here is the story from the NY Times:

National Briefing | West: California: Lead In Bullets Threatens Condor

    Published: June 12, 2001

"Biologists aiding in the reintroduction of California condors into the wild say the giant birds are being threatened by lead from bullets, which scientists believe was the primary reason they were driven 28 years ago to the brink of extinction. Four condors have died in the past year, and an additional 13 have been treated to remove potentially lethal levels of lead. Condor specialists believe that the birds fed on carcasses of animals killed by gunfire, swallowing lead pellets or bullet fragments that slowly poison them."

At one time,,,the Perigrine Falcon was also on the verge of extinction,,,the cause???? DDT used in agriculture,,,,made the shells of their eggs so thin,,they wouldn't support the weight of mamma keeping them warm!!!!

The natural enemy of the condor are 'golden eagles',,,,they just love to kick condor ass!!!! OOOOOH-RA!!!!!!!!!!!
