Sounds like Las Vegas could be making a future play for the Grand! Only 15 to 20 miles from the Vegas Strip and with all the amenities Sparta will never be able to offer. Makes good sense to me!

P.S. Rich, how did Steve Carmichael get the shaft on this one?

Yes there are some great deals in Vegas.
You just dont stay at those super sized resorts.
x2 on the HOT HOT HOT thing. Perhaps the timeing needs to be moved a bit?
    End of September is fantastic.

The Temp Maybe 110 But the Humidity is only about 16%. Much more bareable than 90 with 90% Humidity. Also you can get some good deals on Rooms.

One would think the Shooting Complex management would hook up with a hotel/resort on packages, don't you think?

There are a number of misconceptions and inaccurate rumors regarding this facility floating around. As the saying goes, "the devil is in the details" which are contained in the Operating, Business and Marketing Plans for the Shooting Park, available on its website.

While the clay target center is projected on complete build-out of its five phases to have 120 trap fields, only 24 combined trap/skeet fields will be completed in Phase 1, with an estimated completion date of July 08. The additional 4 phases of 24 trap fields each will be built sequentially as funds from "partners/sponsors" come available. In other words, we will only see the additional phases when major corporations or shooting organizations give Clark County the estimated $2 million dollars to build each phase. So, don't make any hotel reservations for the near future!!

Additionally, the facility is to be self-supporting, run by the County Commission and revenue neutral with regard to the tax-payers. The financial projections for Phase I Clay Target Operations seem very optimistic, to be polite. For instance, they estimate revenue of $1.5 million annually based on approximately 260 days of operation per year and $20/person/visit. This works out to about 290 people per day visiting the facility. If you have ever been to Steve's well-run and popular facility on any normal weekday (much less July and August) you will undertand why this is so offbase. Apparently the planners feel a large number of visitors, particularly those from foreign countries, will flock to the facility instead of enjoying the traditional LV activities.

With regard to Steve and his facility, it is correct that he is getting the shaft. His current lease expires at the end of 08, and the City of Las Vegas, which is now his lessor, has a new plan for the park which does not include a shooting venue. While they may continue his lease until they have the funds to renovate the park, there is probably some desire not to have him competing with the new Clark County facility next door. So, don't look for Steve to stick around when there is no long-term future.

Bottom line, the facility looks good on first blush but there are a number of unrealistic expectations with regard to its success.

A 115 degrees is not uncommon in the summertime. When I lived out there most cars still had the metal handles you gripped and pushed the button with your thumb, these were too hot to touch with your hand without a towel. The annual humidity in Las Vegas is only 7 percent. It can also get very windy there(mostly winter time) with gusts coming out of nowhere, in the 30 plus mph range. You can get dehidrated in a big hurry and not even know it(in summer). There used to be alot of rooms just off the strip at a nice discount. I can get some very good deals with the airlines for junk-et type trips to vegas, they include room, airfare, and in some cases food as well. Most casino's don't keep track of hours spent in casino for these types of trips. I will look forward to going there again after so long. Just, not in the summer months. Break-em all Jeff

Everything in Las Vegas is unrealistic even a shooting complex with a 100 plus traps! They have more money than any of us can imagine. They make unrealistic things happen in that city!

Just think a major homegrounds that we would not have to pay for! It would be very easy for the city and county to set great pkg deals with local hotel/casino's and the ATA. No worries about being gouged by local hotels, stores, restaurants, shops and or casino's. We would simply be chump change in the overall scheme of things.

As far as timing you simply change the shoot date to late September or early October! If I owned any property or business in Sparta, I would be looking for a buyer real real quick!!

My wife and I have been to LV a few times and we find rooms at the north end of the strip to be inexpensive ($35, weekday/night) when buying a "package". Staying on the strip gives my wife the opportunity to do whatever she wants while I do something else. Then we can meet later if we'd like.

LV Gun Club usually has a package thru' one of the "off the strip" hotels and they feature a Texas Hold'em too.

Transportaion on the strip is best by bus at $5.00/24 hours. Driving to the gun club is easy via X-Way and I understand shells can be bought at Bass Pro as well as Wal-Mart.

If you have not been to the LV Gun Club, it's well worth your time if you are in the area.-Jerald

Leaves the kids and some farmers out from Oct-May. If you can do it on a common "spring break" week - that might be ok, if there was a common one.
