NOTE: I've retitled the thread, as we have a "quorum"!

Southborough Rod & Gun Club (Hopkinton, Mass. www.srgclub.com ) is hosting several local clubs in October for a regional grudge match shoot.

We've just switched to Non-tox only.

So...I figured that I'd throw this out there, and see if there's any interest at other Steel-/Non-tox- shooting clubs in an online/postal match.

    General guidelines:

    250 bird match, singles

    50 birds/ shooter

Any size team is acceptable, top five scores are for record

In case of a tie, next highest score is added, and so on

Ideally, a field that is suitable for registered targets would be used, but this is not required

Weekend of October 15-16 (we're shooting Sunday)

ATA membership is not required, but current ATA rules will apply unless noted in the official program.

If you've got any interest, let me know. Email direct to jmpearson@rcn.com, and I'll send you a .doc of the Official Challenge and Rules.

I'd be interested in knowing why your club switched to non-tox.

There's a thread on it already, started by hunter46springfield . I'm not experienced enough here to get the right linky in the reply, but if you do a search under that name, you should find it, and the details.

The steel shot issue will seal the end of shotgun shooting sports.

Lead is NOT the issue the eco-freaks and government agency's are pushing.

    Always follow the money trail.

If you think steel is expensive now, wait and see what it will be when lead is banned!!

Fight stupidity or remain stupid! Choose your side of the political issue.

    Spitter - OUTSTANDING!

I'll final edit and post the Official Rules ASAP.

Timberfaller - I take it that this means that your club is not going to participate?

This thread was started for a specific reason, and it's not to debate the merits of steel, or lack therof. There are several threads on this forum that do it quite thoroughly.

Different clubs, states, and regions have different realities, and one must deal with the situation that one's confronted with. One can embrace reality, or not.

    Timber...

I've fought the good fight and won the war to reopen my trap range... when it came to keeping my range open, I accepted non-toxic shot rather than to shutter the facility. Why bite off your nose to spite your face?!

When I look back - if being saavy enough to figure out how to keep my range open, re-building my club membership and maintaining operational profitabilty by shooting steel shot ammo is somehow being stupid...

Then I'm proud to be the most stupid man in shooting sports...

    regards all,

    Jay

Jay - are you saying the adoption of steel shot has not sealed the end of shooting sports at our club?

This sounds like a great event. Look forward to it.

Good luck fella's on your shoot! I mean it!

    Sorry to offend.

Did you invite any of your local eco-freaks?? Any bets your next fight will be about "sound", then, Why is the grounds have a rust color after the rains?

Just talking and ranting from experience.

Let me know how it turns out.

    No offense taken by me.

Different places have differnt problems. Not sure where you're located, but here, in the People's Republic of Massachusetts, one needs a state-issued license to posess a fired hull, or piece of brass....

As for the "noise" ....that's not a new issue, but an old one around here.

    Thsnks for the good wishes

    Bump.

Still time to sign up to play!

I've obtained a steel sphere that will be the Official Trophy (winning Club has the responsibility of passing it on to the next winning club, if they accept it)

What a great thing for your trophy case!

    Dick,

There are wads for steel with thicker petals to protect your barrel. Factory ammo uses them. We reload with them.

Removeable chokes need to be rated for steel or they might stretch.

The only study I've heard of on patterns shows that steel is actually a little looser than lead. Manufacturers rate chokes a degree looser, but be not afraid. I shoot an xFull fixed 870. No problem.

    MrHappy,

How will the scores be collected? I think you should rename this to 'email shoot' or 'telephone shoot' instead of 'postal shoot'. Using 'postal' has a bad connotation.

Never thought the term "postal" meant "going postal!!

    LOL

I was using it in its old connotation of the rifle competitions.

If you want to play, after you shoot, send the scores to me ( Ideally coppies of the original score sheets, with the top scores noted). Email is fine. I actually know a few Luddites that have no email, and I figured that anyone that found out about it here woudl be able to do the email thing.

The Offical Program actually calls it a Postal/Online shoot (the ATA does this in the AIM program) But it's MY IDEA! I DIDN'T steal it from them, really!

    ;-)

    MOre questions....feel free.

    Good News!

An appropriate Toophy has been secured: A steel sphere, apptox 4 inches in diameter (Clever, eh?) that will be awarded to the winning club, with the understanding that after the next Annual BoS Championship, it will be passed on, just like the Stanley Cup.

    Still time to sign up!
