K stamped on left side of Rem 700

    My Rem 700 has a K stamped on the left side just ahead of the action. The K stands alone on the barrel. The serial numders are about 2 inches behind. Does that mean it came out of the custom shop? It has a jeweled bolt and I bought it new.

    There should be a second letter to date the rifles month/year of production via BLACKPOWDERX. Your rifle was either built in the month of May, or the K year at some point. Remington did get away from this method for a few years, but many models can be dated with this method.

    Otherwise, call Remington with the s/n.

    As far as a custom shop gun, it depends on what it is. How much did you pay for it when it was new. If it was under say $1000, it isn't out of the custom shop.
