Was it a slow burning ball powder that detonated? HMB

I was talking to someone who witnessed the blow-up of a K80 at the Sarasota club a couple of weeks ago. Gun was destroyed but shooter and others on the line were unhurt as I recall. Typical description, top barrel blew off and left side of receiver opened up and splintered forend. JRm

I heard it from a guy on the internet that heard it from a guy at Sarasota who says he say it first hand.

So I guess that makes my input about 4th or 5th generation so I will just defer to a 6th or better generation type person.

Can detonation accure with a powder like 700x? I was on the line at a league shoot last month when a very good shooter also very meticulous had two shells out of 100 go BLAMB. The whole line stopped to look but the shooter said there was no recoil, and to him it sounded like a blooper not a hot load. He said he had talked to a rep from I think IMR that told him you can not get detonation with shotshell powder only rifle or pistol. Anyone know for sure?

Low volume with light powder charges might allow an air gap between powder and wad-especially in tapered hulls. Can I prove it-absolutely not-but I've seen more than a few blowups using 700-X. Flame away!!

    Jerry,

An example of a slow burning ball powder used in shotguns is Winchester 296, an example of a slow burning ball powder used in rifles would be Winchester 760. HMB

"Does this rumor have anything to do with sunspots?"

The attitude was much different from you when it was a CG and not a K80!!!!!

Bob lawless- do you have something other than pure rumor here- is there a detailed safety report and witness statements?

    unless you do

sunspots are as likely a cause of this rumor as anything else

Bob - you obviously cant read and comprehend-- you can look at those CG threads all you want- I wasnt one of the people calling you an idiot nor did I make a conclusion on why the gun blew up

What I did do Bob is question the logic and motives and judgment of any gun company that would sue a gun club.

    regards from Iowa

As long as there is a K-80 blowing up somewhere. It's helps me sleep at night wondering when the next " Sleeper" K-80 is going to go. Jeff
