Jim and Sarah Brady, Brady Campaign Endorse Barack Obama and Joe Biden

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Sarah and Jim Brady and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence with its network of Million Mom March Chapters endorsed Senator Barack Obama for President and Senator Joseph Biden for Vice President today, and urged Americans to vote for them.

Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign, issued the following statement on behalf of the organization and the Bradys:

"Senators Barack Obama and Joseph Biden know that we make it too easy for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons in this country. They know that our weak gun laws have too many loopholes, which lead to over 30,000 deaths and 70,000 injuries from guns every year.

"Senators Obama and Biden know that we can reduce those deaths and injuries from guns by strengthening our Brady background check system, getting military-style assault weapons off our streets, and giving law enforcement more tools to stop the trafficking of illegal guns.

"The difference between the two tickets is clearest with regard to assault weapons. Senator Obama made his position clear in his acceptance speech in Denver when he said "t he reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals." And Senator Biden helped get a ban on assault weapons passed in 1994 and fought for its renewal in 2004.

"Senator McCain, however, opposed the assault weapon ban in 1994 and voted against its renewal in 2004. McCain's running mate, Governor Sarah Palin, told ABC's Charles Gibson that she also opposed a ban on assault weapons, saying that they were part of her "culture".

"The Obama-Biden ticket understands that the rights of law-abiding gun owners can co-exist with the reasonable restrictions which the U.S. Supreme Court recognized as "presumptively lawful" in its recent Second Amendment decision finding a general gun ban unconstitutional. As Justice Scalia stated, there is "not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever for whatever purposes." Senator McCain once understood this concept but that "straight talk" is now silent.

"The Obama-Biden ticket will work with law enforcement, gun violence victims, and ordinary citizens who want to do more to protect themselves, their families, and their communities by making it harder for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons.

"Along with Sarah and Jim, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and its dedicate network of Million Mom March Chapters strongly endorses the Obama-Biden ticket and encourages our supporters to vote for them on November 4, 2008."

To find out more about other Brady Campaign endorsements, as well as where the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates stand on the gun issue, go to the Brady Voter Education Fund's web guide at BradyVoter.org (http://www.bradyvoter.org).

As the nation's largest, non-partisan, grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence, the Brady Campaign, with its dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters, works to enact and enforce sensible gun laws, regulations and public policies. The Brady Campaign is devoted to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in our communities.

Guys, they just want to get the "assault weapons" off the street. We don't need to worry, we are safe with our trap guns. Not.

Nothing like divide and conquer. We need to stick together and and fight ANY gun bans or restrictions. If we don't, they will chip away till we are all defenseless.

CCRKBA Calls on Obama to Repudiate, Reject Brady Campaign Endorsement

BELLEVUE, Wash., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- If Democrat Barack Obama truly supports gun rights and the Second Amendment, he should immediately repudiate and reject today's endorsement by the anti-gun Brady Campaign, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said.

"By accepting an endorsement from the nation's leading gun ban organization," said CCRKBA Legislative Affairs Director Joe Waldron, "Barack Obama would be declaring to every gun owner in America that he has lied to them all these months during the presidential campaign. If he accepts this endorsement, Obama may as well spit on the Second Amendment."

The Brady Campaign announced its endorsement Monday by noting that Obama and his running mate, anti-gun Sen. Joe Biden from Delaware, will "strengthen" the Brady Law, and would once again outlaw commonly-owned semi-automatic sport/utility rifles.

"The Brady Campaign wants to completely eliminate certain types of firearms," Waldron noted, "which is precisely the kind of thing that was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court's Heller decision in June. They claim that Barack Obama is the man who can get that done. This is hardly the kind of endorsement that will earn points among target shooters, hunters and gun collectors, who have harmed nobody and broken no laws.

"But the Brady Campaign would make these people criminals on paper simply because they own certain types of firearms," he added. "Their endorsement of the Obama/Biden ticket to accomplish that goal is tantamount to a home invasion robbery of every gun owner in the United States.

"If Barack Obama thinks gun owners should give him their votes after this endorsement, it is an insult to their intelligence," Waldron observed. "That seems to be nothing new, however, after he's had one so-called hunter's and shooter's group shilling for him on the campaign trail, to say nothing of his selection of Joe Biden as his running mate.

"Obama should tell the Brady Campaign to get lost, or gun owners will say that loud and clear to him on Nov. 4," Waldron concluded.

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (www.ccrkba.org) is one of the nation's premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States.

I KNEW they would bring her out when they needed her. I figured it would have been sooner. I guess since the Supreme Court slapped them around, they didn't know if they were going to play that card. The 2nd Amendment turned into the third rail for them.

What this shows me is that they NEEDED to try something else. They weren't going to even MENTION the gun rights issue. NOW, something has FORCED them to drag that old lame argument back out.

That something is hearing all our voices denouncing obama for the "gun grabber" that he is. They only do things in campaigns for a reason. If you think that brady brought this "endorsement" out on her own, at this time, you are nuttier than swanny or hopeIcanbestr8again.

She has worked hand in hand with schumer and fienstein for years. This is NOT a coincidence that they came out with that today.

They hear us and they know the "gun rights" vote can be VERY detrimental to their candidate.

    Lets make it so.

Brian, don't hold your breath waiting for a response.

I'm still waiting for swansong to answer the question I asked him about being better than some people on this site.

    NO answer. Typical liberal.

AJ100, why, that sounds like a conspiracy theory. But WHO could get Sarah Brady to torpedo Obama? WHO stands to gain if Obama loses to McCain?

Brady Campaign Announces Plans to Hold Legislators Accountable for Votes

    Last update: 11:33 a.m. EDT Oct. 14, 2008

    CHICAGO,, Oct 14, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ --

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence today announced they are targeting state legislators who voted against sensible gun laws and electing candidates who will work to pass sensible gun laws to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people.

Brian Malte of the Brady Campaign was joined by Chicago 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti, 33rd Ward Alderman Richard F. Mell, gun violence survivor Willie Williams and Cook County State's Attorney Richard A. Devine at Crane High School in Chicago to announce plans for holding Illinois state legislators accountable on the gun issue in this year's elections.

The Brady Campaign announced that its first target for defeat is Rep. Dennis Reboletti in State House District 46 who voted "no" on the Brady Campaign's top legislative priority to require Brady criminal background checks on each handgun sold. The Brady Campaign is targeting his district with an initial 10,000-piece mailing and phone call campaign to voters in his district. The 10,000 postcards were mailed to voters today. The Brady Campaign has endorsed Reboletti's opponent, Gary Nowak.

Speakers at the event spoke of the need to have accountability from legislators in order to enact stronger gun laws at the state level to help stop the gun violence plaguing Chicago and other communities. "In just this last week, a 13-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were killed by gun violence on our city's streets," said Richard A. Devine, Cook County State's Attorney. "Earlier this year an Elmhurst woman was stalked and shot to death. Enacting a state law to require criminal background checks on each handgun purchase will give us another tool to limit the number of guns on our streets and stem this carnage in our community."

"The lack of stronger statewide gun laws has contributed greatly to the seemingly endless supply of illegal guns in Chicago," said Alderman Richard F. Mell of Chicago's 33rd Ward. "The City of Chicago is calling on our elected officials to enact strong state gun laws to stop illegal gun trafficking and to stop the gun violence."

"The gun violence in Chicago must stop. We are tired of seeing our children being shot and killed and we need solutions," said Alderman Bob Fioretti of Chicago's 2nd Ward. "We must hold accountable those legislators who are standing in the way of enacting strong state gun laws."

The Brady Campaign has been raising funds to target legislators who voted against sensible gun laws in the last session of the Illinois legislature. In particular, the Brady Campaign is targeting legislators in the Chicago suburbs who voted against HB 758, sponsored by Rep. Harry Osterman, which would have extended Brady criminal background checks to all handgun purchasers. The bill lost by two votes last April.

"Too many people are sitting on the sidelines afraid to get involved," said Willie Williams of the Willie Williams III Youth Foundation. "We need everyone to stand up and stop the guns from coming into our neighborhoods. Without our youth, there is no future."

The Brady Campaign will be announcing other expenditures in the coming days.

I love that term, "sensible gun laws."

Makes it seem like the 2nd Amendment just wasn't sensible.

    Silly founding fathers.
