...Israeli, UK media report increased planning for confrontation with Iran

    .By Laura Rozen

    Senior Foreign Affairs Reporter

    (AP)
Just as the United States is preparing to unwind itself from its involvement in the Middle East--departing Iraq and transferring lead security responsibilities in Afghanistan to Afghans by 2014--a new round of tension appears to be surfacing between Iran and Israel.

Reports in the Israeli press indicate that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak are working to convince other members of Netanyahu's cabinet and Israeli security chiefs that Israel needs to launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear program.

Netanyahu and Barak "are trying to muster a majority in the cabinet in favor of military action against Iran, a senior Israeli official has said," Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported Wednesday in a piece co-bylined by four reporters. The two officials "recently persuaded Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who previously objected to attacking Iran, to support such a move," according to the Ha'aretz acount, which has garnered an unusual degree of attention from western policymakers.

The Ha'aretz report followed a piece late last week by Israel's leading columnist, Nahum Barnea, on the front page of Israel's largest circulation daily Yediot Ahronoth, titled "Atomic Pressure." It begins: "Have the prime minister and defense minister settled on a decision, just between the two of them, to launch a military attack on the nuclear facilities in Iran?" The piece then continues:

Lets move out of all the foreign countries , stop our dumping of Billions to them all and let them destroy each other . If the sympathisers in this country object then they can move back to where the hell they came from and do the fighting themselves .

Uh, That would be attacking yet another neighboring country.

I am sure it will be "humanitarian bombing".

What a surprise! (not). The US/ Isreali relationship prior to King Obama was the only thing holding back Iran in the first place. Israel will appear to be the aggressor in this mix, and yes they will strike at the right time. It's inevitable if Iran can't bluff their way through this or change their path.

Does Cuban Missle Crisis ring a bell?

After the strike, what will be the US action?

Sounds about right for Israel to pick a fight and then expect us to fight it for them. If they insist on a fight, let them use their young people not ours. Isreal would have ceased to exist without our aid and wouldn't have the resources to finish what they start without our money, munitions and men.

Obama would denounce Israel if it happened on his watch. He might even send troops to protect Iranian interests.

Try looking at History. Israel will do the same thing to Iran that they did to Iraq in 1980 and when Iraq was trying to build a nuke power plant. Israel will violate everyones airspace and then bomb and demolish Irans Nuke plant. And... they'll get away with it.

Officials from every country as well as our own presidential candidates have all said the Iran with a nuclear weapon is "unacceptable". Yet, no one is willing to DO anything about it. Talk is cheap and when those crazies actually have a bomb, it will be too late to do anything. In spite of the talk, everyone is too willing to accept the unacceptable - except Israel.

I expected such an attack last spring. Looks like I was a bit early. Without a regime change in Iran, it is inevitable and warranted. Imagine if Hitler had the bomb. What would the world look like today? What makes the prospect of a nuclear armed Iran any more palatable or less dangerous?

Israel's strike against Iraq worked perfectly and removed the nuclear threat from the region. An attack on nuclear facilities in Iran would do the same PLUS galvanize the Iranian dissidents to topple the present regime. Two excellent outcomes.

If and when they do it, it will be a surprise to everyone. Well, almost everyone. You do understand plausible denial? They don't advertise. Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't done it already. Will we come to their aid? Of course. Have we ever not? Israel has always been a surrogate for the USA.

When did American troops ever fight a war for Israel? Hotsprings, you are lucky there is no IQ test requirement for gun ownership.

After watching them in the 6 day war, I don't think Israel needs any help.

Talk about a good old fashioned ass kicking, that was it.

6 day war was 40+ years ago. Things change in 40 years. They got their butts kicked the last time they invaded Lebanon.

Shooting Zero-- Where do you think Isreal gets all of their military might, airplanes, missles etc. The good old US of A supplies it with billions of free taxpayers dollars.
