Is a 686 Silver Pigeon 20 gauge a pretty good gun?

IMO, they are the best buy in that price range.

I just purchased a 686 Silver Pigeon in 12 gauge for $800, but it has a small amount of pitting on the receiver. It was a consignment sale and I think it was priced to sell fast. When the budget allows I'll get a 20 gauge too. Most of them seem to go for around $1,200 - $1,400.
