Does anyone have any information from the Idaho State Trap Shoot?

    Windy and cold.

If you are looking for scores, I left before the shootoffs. Boise is a bit laidback when it comes to running a shoot. I had a 10 hour drive yesterday, so I could get home in time to go to work today.

I did have the fortune of shooting with Shaun Cahoon when he ran the last 100 and a 99 on the first half. I hope he ended up in a shootoff. Great kid to shoot with.

I deliberately stayed away, so have no information about winners or scores, and only some secondhand information about other issues. Hopefully someone who was there can chime in with some firsthand observations.

As some of you may know, there was a lot of controversy over the location of this year's shoot. In the past, there was a three-year rotation of sites - Lewiston, Pocatello, Boise. The 2010 shoot was in Boise. A couple of years ago the Lewiston lost its lease. They were on land adjacent to the airport, and for various reasons were forced to vacate. They have not yet found a suitable site to rebuild. Some northern shooters wanted to hold the 2011 shoot in Walla Walla, WA. That's about 100 miles from Lewiston, and would be about the same distance from Boise or Pocatello as Lewiston is from those two locations. A vote at the 2010 State meeting requiring the Idaho State Shoot to be held in Idaho fell only a few votes short of passing with a two-thirds majority (since the motion was to amend the ISTA Constitution, a two-thirds majority was needed for passage). Although it did not pass, the message to the ISTA Directors was clear - the State Shoot should remain in Idaho. At the fall meeting of the ISTA Directors, a motion was passed, unanimously on a roll-call vote, to ask Boise to host the 2011 shoot, and hold the 2012 shoot in Pocatello as originally intended. I cannot speak for the other Directors, but my stated intent in making the motion was to give the northern shooters some breathing room to get a new club built capable of hosting the shoot in the regular rotation. Some eastern shooters vehemently disagreed with the decision. There were threats of lawsuits, and I took a lot of grief for my part in the decision. Some shooters formed a new oranization, the Idaho Trapshooters Association (ITA), and called for a vote at the shoot to replace the ISTA with the ITA as the official organization representing Idaho shooters.

Now for the secondhand information. I was told that the vote was held and the majority voted to keep the ISTA as their representative. I was told that a fair number of the discontented shooters walked out of the meeting, whereupon a motion was made and passed by a substantial majority to make Boise the permanent home grounds of the Idaho ATA State Shoot.

In my opinion, most of the ISTA Directors tried to make the best decision for all the shooters in Idaho. I've been attacked for my part in that decision by several shooters I thought were my friends. I'm done shooting ATA targets in SE Idaho, and maybe altogether. I'll just go play with my dog Rocky for a few years. It's a lot more fun.

Pocatello I am a northern shooter, Orofino, and just want to say that it doesn't really matter to me where the state shoot is held since it can't be in Lewiston. I got the letter that went around about the forming of a new governing body for the state assn. Trap shooting does not need anymore problems and with the declining numbers everyone needs to pull together Everyone instead of bitching should just SHUT UP AND SHOOT and enjoy it, leave the politics out. Hang in there, we can't afford to loose any more shooters.

That's really bad Larry. Sorry to hear all of this. I would much rather shoot in Pocatello than Boise.

    Hope you change your mind.

    Hey Larry,

I have just started shooting again after a couple of years off. This whole attempted coup, in my opinion, did nothing but polarize many people. Here you are, a good man, saying no more ATA. It is sad and rediculous to me that all of this happened. I watched in amazement of some of the self serving attitudes that were displayed either in person at the meeting or on paper prior to it. I chose not to get too involved in the fiasco and don't blame you for staying away.

I enjoy shooting at Poky much more than Boise and I live in the Boise area. I do, however, think that a centrally located venue that is the same each year IS in the best interest of all the trapshooters in Idaho. One only has to look at which state shoots across the country are the most successful and he will notice that they all have one thing in common, a homegrounds that people travel to each year.

I sincerely hope to see you at the next ATA shoot that I attend.

    J.O. Cotant (1997)

Go back in history and hold the PITA State Shoot in Pocatello. Joe would be smiling down on you. He was a great guy and sportsman.

    J. O. Cotant was one of the original Supporters of the PITA along with O.N. Ford, Founder of the PITA and a 1995 Hall of Fame inductee.

His 1939 averages show he shot almost 6,000 targets. This was a tremendous amount for those days, he must have traveled far and wide to register them.

J.O. had the second highest cumulative average in the association, second only to Frank Troeh. He was also President of the PITA in 1939-1940. During the 1939 Grand Pacific he set a new record in the sliding handicap. It was the first time a 100 straight was broken in this event.

Cotant was deeply involved in the promotion of the Pocatello Trap Club for almost 50 years. He was instrumental in hosting several PITA State and Zone shoots in the 30’s and 40’s. A great family man and sportsman.

Big Heap, I suspect you may be right, and Pocatello may decide to hold PITA shoots rather than ATA shoots. If that happens, I suspect that most Utah and Montana shooters will no longer come to Pocatello, and everybody will lose.

Pocatello is a fine place to shoot but it appears to me they are headed to a fun shoot club only. They done away with the zone shoot, they cancelled an ealier shoot or two and now they don,t get the state shoot anymore.
It looks like the good old boy way of running things must change. I know for a fact that some of there directors are stuck in a rut and don,t like change. I know they had better take a look around and get it fixed quick or they will be loosing more than just Utah shooters.
