Ok, Hopefully I won't get bashed by Spartans. But here goes: I miss going back every year, doing the same things..eating sausage sandwiches while watching people shoot...Taking the yearly trip thru the hall of fame and looking at the pictures..remembering that I was just starting my work career in 1977 when Dean Shanahan won the Jeep..going year by year thru my life and memories of grands those years. I retired this year, and wish I could take that last victory lap thru the hall of fame pictures, 1977-2008.

What was better than that very first ride on the wagon every year, after you got out of the car?? Hearing the calls of PULL! over the tractor engine, and the whistle of the shot. The thankfulness that we made it another year, back to another grand..no matter how young or old we were.

Memories of my closest chance at fame..having a 98 going into the last 25 of the GAH in 2002! I'd dropped 2 birds on the first 25, and then ran 50 straight..I was in the zone, you know the feeling, that you can do it!!! I knew a 98 would almost always get you at least a spot shooting off for a top 20 place..a thin chance, but for an average shooter like me, a once in a lifetime chance. I choked and dropped 2 birds on the last 25 for a 96. But I'll never forget it.

Look forward to others memories if you want to share.

bigdoxtx. Great answer. But for a few only the past remains. Forget about the future or new adventures, might improve on the past. - Jim

I miss the overcalls, parking hassles, people breaking into vehicles to steal guns, all of the trees and shade at the west end, the constant distractions and background of the airport, and stopping shooting cause the VPs plane is landing/taking off.

Was only there a few years. But my first time there I shot a 100 at singles. I only have shot a 100, 3 times in my life......but one of them was first time at the grand. Pretty cool stuff.

I miss Vandalia and everything about it, and don't ever plan to get over it. SO THERE!!! Don't try to justify to me why I shouldn't grieve over its loss. And I consider those who feel the same way that I do as "brothers" from a past_ great and truly historic time, facility and event. It's not just for the shooters of Ohio, PA and the east to feel this void...many of us grieve this loss from all over the world!

But the way I see it, we are the "Ned Lillys and J.A.R. Elliotts " of the trap world today. Vandalia was once a new facility and no one then could fathom its eventual success.

If I'm lucky, by the time they bury this now 62 year old body of mine, I'll have wonderful memories of TWO great GRAND facilities to take with me. So jump in there and support Sparta. Look at what you have to to gain....being one of the first to participate in the greatest "new" shooting facility in the world.

Sometimes I think we (I included) need a shrink, or paster or something to help with this! :)

Shooting your only hot score of the week so far...then, the sound of the staple gun smacking the scoreboard, as you waited breathlessly for them to post your sheet to make sure they got it right...the crackle of the intercom during shootoffs, from far away in the distance...when you got closer, the sound of the loud drunks behind the grandstands...the next morning, the crackled recording of the Star Spangled Banner over the speakers...first 24 squads report to your benches...tractor engines...cherry pipe smoke wafting out of Ron English's vendor stall...the smell of coconut suntan lotion on the puller girl...the smell of that expensive gun oil when you walked into the Krieghoff building...the blast of cold air as you walked into the CEB...standing there watching the blast of cold air hit the pretty women in tight tank tops as _they_ walked into the CEB...bearing down on your stock trying to run the last 5 birds for a 95 when suddenly, the loudspeaker roars "Attention Shooters, the Central Entry Building will close in fifteen minutes, the Central..."...and every year, the line of H.S. girls' rumps lined up on blankets, "Butler Kickline" stamped across the rear...the girl with the horribly peeling, sunburned shoulders...the spiky-haired butch woman in the ATA shirt with the horribly tattooed body...the Chinese girl who could solve a Rubik's cube 5 times in 10 minutes...

Then, after shooting a 91 that day, sitting in the bleachers at night, soused, looking at the twinkling row of lights along the airport...

Having grown up about 1 hour south of Vandalia and with family still in Ohio, it was always the reason to go home in August. Shoot the Grand, go home to family, friends and a familiar bed each night. Maybe one day I will make it to Sparta, but it will not be the same as "The Grand".

I propose we dig up and transplant some of those trees to Sparta.

A monumental task, but maybe we could get Hunter pallets to kick in a few bucks.

Nice post and pictures. It brought back some really great memories. Say what you want about Vandalia but it did have a certain cache.

For those that are ignorant and say get a life and move on I suggest you erase all your fond memories.
