I just loaded 150 1 oz Trial Loads in Rio Hulls w/12SO Claybuster wads using 18 grs of Promo Powder, Rio Primers.

Will be shooting them in Buddy Shoots from the 27 yard line.

Am using them in my CG w/Full Choke Tube, may try the X-Full Tube too.
depends on the breaks I get w/full choke tube.

I hope there is enough soldiers in the One Ounce load to get the 27 yard job done.

A very good 27 yard shooter told us about the 1 1/8th oz load you need all the soldiers you can get to get the job done and he was a grand slammer before 1980.

I will give an update on this load.

Tried a nearly identical load but using 24gms of #7-1/2, infront of 19gr Promo. Inspite of apparent speed, very little recoil. Deadly on wobbles.
Let us know how you like them. Chichay

Gary, any particular reason why you are keeping the speed so low? That sounds more like a singles load than a handicap load. If you are expecting similar performance to the AA silver bullets that you like, then you will likely be disappointed. You might consider jacking the speed up a bit, just my opinion.

All I use is 1oz in the buddy matches. 20gr solo 1000, fiocchi primer, claybuster lightening wad, in an STS, with 7.5 & 8 mixed. That's all I shoot down at charlies where I'm sure you will be using those shells. BYG

I load 1 oz loads for my daughter. She shot a "99" from the 26 yard line with them to get her "27" yard pin.

Nothing wrong with 1 oz handicap loads, especially if they are speedy.

My experience with the Rio hulls is that they are oversized, and I've not found a wad to work in them. Too much blow-by, with inconsistent pressures shot to shot. I wouldn't waste the shot, wads, powder or primers on those hulls. Let us know how they worked out for you.

<blockquote><I>"My experience with the Rio hulls is that they are oversized, and I've not found a wad to work in them."</I></blockquote>I was told by some Rio reloaders that Claybuster was supposed to have resized the powder cup of their 12S3 wads last winter to allow them to work better in Rio hulls. They had apparently gotten this info right from CB. Seeing as how the powder cup is only half the seal (along with the base of the shot cup) and nothing was said about the shot cup, I don't know if the change made occurred or if it made any difference.

Buddy shoots from the 27 Y L need 1-1/8 oz 7 1/2 at 1235-1250 if you have to use new shells. Do you expect to win anything with that 1 oz ? It will be a 16 Y L shell at best. If allowed ,1 1/4 #6 is better yet. I have tried about everything in the last 50+ years. But I still don't know it all.

hey longshot. boy oh boy. you know the recipe that you gave me about shootoff shells when we talked at the cardinal shoot.Well i'm happy to report that I'm not a "longshot" shooter. BUT we shot protector/buddy shoots on sunday. Well the shootoff pad is 55 yards. Got in several shootoff's. Broka a few first targets and made a couple of pickups. Boy are they terrific. I wanter to thank you for the info. motordoc

Motordoc did you load your own or use the shells you got from me?

The ones you got from me are the Balls to the wall in shootoffs, that is a good load from that 55 yards.

I ampresently using 2 3/4 dram loads 1 1/8th oz 7.5s Top Guns and they are doing the job nicely.

That is why I want to try the 1200fps 1 oz loads.

So 150 of them ought to give me a decent idea of how they will work.
