I purchased a Model 12 20ga. the serial number is 29,xxx my book shows it was made in 1912. The barrel show it is Nickle Steel and the book says that came at a later time.

Also the model 42 has a rib with doughnut posts, did it come from the factory like that?

Your model 12 has the correct barrel for 1912. Concerning the 42 the rib was probably installed by simmons. Yes, it could be original but one never knows and if it was done properly which it sounds like it is. Then it could be factory. Winchester for a number of years had Simmons install most all ventilated ribs.

According to the Winchester 42 book written by Ned Schwing in 1954 Winchester contracted with Simmons to produce and install ribs under license from Simmons on Model 42's and 12's. This was called the Winchester Special Ventilated Rib.
If your 42 is in serial number range starting around 125,000 to 149,000 it could have a Winchester installed Doughnut Base Rib.
This rib would have wavy line matting on the top of the rib. There would be no stamping on the side of the rib, it would have "Doughnut Bases".
The Winchester proof mark should be on the left side of the barrel AND receiver.
After serial 149,000 Winchester contracted with Simmons to install ribs at their factory
If the rib was installed by Simmons it will be marked on the side of the rib "Simmons Patented" Or "Simmons Gun Specialties Inc. Kansas City MO" With several different post and rib matting configurations depending on serial number.
If your rib is stamped with the Olathe Kansas address it was not installed by Winchester and was added later by Simmons.
