    Hello:
I purchased two canes today. One is wood and one is metal. I will be filling the metal one up with lead shot so if someone bothers me, I can defend myself.

Any one know if I need a permit to carry this special type of cane that I'm making for self protection?

My wife's niece works all over the world for Operation Smile and while she was in one of the countries in Africa she bought her grandpa (wifes dad) who is 95 a cane that is carved with African symbols over the length of the cane. Kinda neat actually..

That would be a very unwise move Steve. A district attorney could kill you in court. Just get a very heavy, strong cane that will accomplish the same basic task without modifying it. It is the modification for purpose that you want to avoid. Don't ever give a D.A. anything they can use against you.

What wireguy said! Go to your stockyard, and look around. There is usually someone there selling canes made out of Hickory wood. They are very hard to break and you can wear a mugger out with one !

Dye your hair to a nice dark brown and throw the cane away. We all know that WI has conceal carry in place. Don't take a cane to a gun fight!

I have my granddad's cane. It is a standard looking cane, and the handle unscrews. Inside, there is a plastic tube flask that he put whiskey in. It's pretty neat.

If you truly need a cane, it does have benefits. You will usually be escorted around waiting lines at license offices, airlines, etc. I think you have probably earned it. IMHO Ron

Cold steel makes a great cane, I remember an elderly man that had a remington cane gun that was pretty cool.

Who had a cane years ago on a tv western? Was it Bat Masterson?

I spoke to my son this evening on skype, as he lives in Stockholm. I told him I purchased two canes today as I am not getting around so well. He said I just saw you a couple weeks ago and you were throwing bodies out of your way at the local buffet, as you were faster than any one else getting in to the food line, what happened?

I told him go ahead make fun of me as someday I'll be 3 foot 6. Three foot wide, six foot deep.

Yesterday, after returning from the local mall I realized that customer service will probably never be like years ago.

I walked by a kiosk where some young people were selling cell phones. As I was walking by some young guy says to me "how ya doing old timer"? I stoped and said I'm curious, hold old are you? He said 19. I said my name is Steve, not old timer, and you should refer to your elders as sir not old timers. He did not say a word and I continued my walk.

I find most of the young people today are good kids. I'm sure this young man didn't know any better, as you live and learn with age.

Stl Flyn, funny you mentioned a baseball bat.

At the mall this year, I saw a guy walking with an unusual cane.

It was a "baseball" that he had made into a cane.

I'm sure that he could take care of himself if needed.

He would surely surprise anyone if he needed to use it.

I was trying to walk for exercise but my Parkinson's started acting up. You live with the cards your dealt in life. As a young boy my mom always said never feel sorry for yourself as there is always someone else that has it worse than you.

I had a good run and if I can continue shooting 50 targets a week and see my friends at the gun club I'm happy. My wife asked me the other day if I could live my life over again would I change any thing?

I told her no I wouldn't change a thing. For you healthy young guys out there cherrish your youth and your physical health as getting old is not easy.

Around 10 years ago my son offered to buy me a new MX8. I appreciated the kind gesture but I declined. I just don't feel right about accepting gifts from family or friends.

Even at Christmas I do not want gifts. I have always enjoyed giving more than receiving them.

My mom is calling me to help her for something, will write later if I can.

Using a walking cane as a self protection device is excellent thinking. The best one to get is one that you can't break, no matter what. The only material that fits this description, that is a legitimate walking stick, is rattan. It is solid, made of multitudinous long fibers like bamboo, and very effective when used in a defensive/offensive strategy. There is a book by A.C Cunningham entitled 'The Cane as a Weapon' that describes very well how to use the cane as a weapon. Also, Google 'stick fighting' and read about the uses of sticks and canes as weapons in different cultures. There are numerous videos on YouTube about cane and stick fighting that will show you some of the techniques involved.

I carry a rattan, hook-topped cane with a rubber crutch tip when I go out at night, or on trips by air. It passes the airport scanners with no problems and is instantly available for use without upsetting the general populace. You can be well protected if you have a rattan cane and have taught yourself how to use it.
