What's the purpose of an adjustable butt plate? How is it used in conjunction with an adjustable comb and an adjustable rib? How does its use affect your sight picture? Any help would be much appreciated.

It allows you to set your gun up so that your head is erect and eyes level. You should look out of the center of your eyes not the top or sides. It will also allow you to make the butt pad fit your shoulder by canting the pad. The comb is only for adjusting the point of impact and the adjustable rib adjusts so you get a figure 8 sight picture.

An adjustable buttplate allows one to set the angle of the buttpad to match your shoulder pocket (look at where your arm meets the shoulder when your arm is raised, as in holding a gun). The joint of arm and shoulder is not vertical, but on a slant. The adjustable buttplate lets you set the pad in this "pocket" for more comfort. It also helps in preventing canting of the gun, since the tendency is to angle the gun to match the shoulder pocket angle with a fixed buttplate. You can also move the buttpad up or down to better fit on the shoulder and let more of the pad surface contact the shoulder. This aids in reducing "felt" recoil. The adjustable buttplate does not affect appreciably the sight picture or POI, as this is done through an adjustable comb and/or adjustable rib.

I think anyone who is considering getting some type of recoil reducing device put on their competition shotgun should try an adjustable butt plate first.....lots cheaper & will allow you to place the recoil pad where it needs to be......proper placement of the pad on the shoulder pocket can make a real difference in felt recoil.
