Just wondered if anyone could give me some recommendations for a hotel to stay at for 2011 Grand. I know its early, but looking for some decent place to stay as last years' experience was not all that great. Anything within a 40 minute drive one way would work.........Thanks,.......Rob G.

And no it's not too early. In fact if you don't make your reservations real soon you'll have a real tough time getting anything. I have not personally stayed at any of these. Just trying to be helpful.

Matt is right on the money, but a few of those he suggested are more in the neighborhood of an hour drive than 40 minutes. Jack

Jack--Your right and i should have stated that. I actually didn't compile that list but just copy/pasted it from another thread. I do know where most of these are. Its just that there aren't alot that count as a Hotel within a 40 minute drive. I also stated i haven't stayed at any of them on the list. Actually i have stayed at the Sheritan (used to be the Fountains) in Fairview Heights and it is very nice. My work Christmas party used to be held there and we would just spend the night rather than Drink'n and Drive'n. I also deleted one from the list that i wouldn't send anybody too whether i liked them or not. Hopefully none of the others on the list fit that category.

There are (4) Motels/Hotels in Sparta. The (2) North Of town are fine. The (2) DownTown are a "Stay at Your Own Risk" type thing. They are the ones i omitted from the list. The Holiday Inn Express is very nice and very well maintained. It is almost certainly booked up already and the other is The Briarwood Inn. These two are clean and well maintained. The (2) that you should avoid at all costs are the Sparta Motel and The Budget Inn. They are bad very bad. This having been said, you could probably get a room there and not have to drive very far at all. You make the call on your own. If you want an idea on what the Bad ones are like, here is a homemade vid of the Budget Inn. Click on the link above.

Holiday Inn in Sparta, told me they are not taking reservations until new year. The other 2 in Sparta, wait until all thier annual vendors have made their plans secure, and then they will take reservations after April sometime. Thanks,........Rob

There was a lot of talk about tent camping when the facility was being built, it would be a great experience and a way to get back in touch with nature ... Bring some fishing gear and you can get food right out of the lakes and cook them on an open fire right there at your camp site ... Camp close to a bush so you will have rest room facilitys close by like they did (so they said) way back when the ATA first moved to Vandalia, and you can shower in the facilitys on the grounds ... It'll be fun and you can have an experiance like you have never had before while telling stories of when Vandalia was first getting started and actually live it in Sparta ... The shooters who have evolved might look at you a little strange but anyone can get comfy in a motorhome or travel trailer, it takes real men and ladies to do it like the founding fathers of the ATA did ... Let us know how it goes, you might start a new tradition, you never know, you know ..? Have fun ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Are there any upscale hotels (full restaurant/bar, pool, etc.) within 30 - 40 minutes?

Tenting at the Grand with 103 temperatures can be done. But notice the secret weapon..Air Conditioned Tent..Don't see that everyday...just a short walk to the showers...Not bad accommodations but I won't do it again...

pdq(Pete)--If you go on into St. Louis which is actually only about 55-60 minutes there are several that fit that upscale hotel((full restaurant/bar, pool, etc.) as you put it. They are right downtown across the river. The newest is the LUMIÈRE PLACE which is a Casino as well. The info is above. I have a friend that stayed there and said it was Top Notch. I guess that could be subject to interpretation.
