I always like to place a small bet ( $100 or less) on the derby. I like General Quarters. Anybody have an opinon or a favorite

Two secrets to betting on horses:

    1. The fastest horse doesn't always win, but that is the way to bet. and;

    2. Bet more on your winners than your losers.

My Grandad, who was a big time gambler used to always say to me Son, when it comes to gambling there are two sure fire winners, "Be Wise" and "Don't Bet".

And also me being a bad loser, his other words of advice, "If you can't stand the heat stay out of the Kitchen"

    Wise old man my Grandad.

Pity he did not practice what he preached.

    cubancigar,

Take it from a guy in Kentucky.....I Want Revenge is the horse to bet. Please read disclaimer....I do not reimburse lost wages! LOL! If I was going to lay a Franklin tomorrow, it would be I Want Revenge on the nose!

For derby picks in the Louisville Courier-Journal try this link.

    http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20090502/SPORTS08/305020012/Picks+and+tips+from+the+experts+for+Kentucky+Derby+2009

Copy and paste into your address line.

Beware - The Courier Journal is a liberal newspaper so stick with the Derby picks.

With a 20 horse field and a muddy track, it is a good day for a long shot.

I like CubanCigar's pick, General Quarters, out of the 12 (of 20) post position.

At 20:1 in the early betting, he may be a good choice on a muddy track. I sure would not bet the favorite on a muddy track.

This derby could be run in the rain so let's hope for a safe race.

    cubancigar,

I was away from computer yesterday. When I found out I Want Revenge was scratched, I didn't have a pick. I didn't bet a single dollar on it. The horse that won paid $103.20 for a $2.00 bet. I wished I had $100.00 on his nose. I would be $5160.00 richer today.

I played a superfecta and my wife talked me into changing it at the last minute. It would have won $278,000. I missed it by one horse

Actually the trainer hauled the horse from NM in a trailer behind his pickup. He had a bunch of screws in his ankle from a MC accident and was on crutches. The trip took him 21 hrs., and when asked if the return trip would be on a plane, he simply stated, " NO ".

The owners paid $9,500.00 for the horse. The superfecta on a $2.00 bet paid almost $500,000.00.

How that horse turned it up that much on a track that bad is beyond me. Barring something unforeseen, we may just have another triple crown winner.
