Congresswoman: Handguns Should Be Banned If Five-Year-Olds Can Fire Them

Suggests it could prevent string of tragedies involving accidental child shootings

    by David Mark

Rep. Jackie Speier says she wants to prevent gun accidents involving children. The California Democrat has introduced legislation that would require that all handguns manufactured, sold in, or imported into the United States to incorporate technology that precludes the average 5-year-old child from operating a handgun when it is ready to fire.

The measure, the Child Handgun Safety Act, would also require that within two years, any handgun sold, offered for sale, traded, transferred, shipped, leased, or distributed in the U.S. to be child-resistant or retrofitted with a child-resistant mechanism.

Speier, who represents the southern part of San Francisco and the Peninsula, said the legislation is necessary to avoid tragedies like the 5-year old girl in New Orleans who accidentally shot and killed herself with a .38 caliber revolver. Speier's office cites a string of other such incidents, including a 3-year-old boy in Corsicana, Texas, who died after a self-inflicted shooting with a handgun inside a bedroom in his home, striking himself in the head.

    Speier said in a statement:

Each year, we are saddened by unspeakable tragedies involving guns and children. Yet, a majority of gun deaths involving children are preventable at the point of manufacturing. More than half of child deaths from guns result from accidents or failure to secure guns in the home. In the past, we have taken similar safety measures with products such as butane lighters and prescription drug bottles. It's inexcusable we haven't done the same with deadly weapons. We have an urgent responsibility to prevent these tragic deaths through smart, more effective handgun policies.

Speier is longtime gun control advocate, stretching back to her days as a state legislator. Her Bay Area district plays host to numerous gun shows each year, and many sportsmen call the coastal region home. Speier's bill faces long odds in the Republican-controlled House.

Some may wish to have there heads in the sand on this subject, but I come across articles weekly where young children in a home shoot themselves or others with a handgun they found in them home!

What's with adults leaving unsecured loaded handguns in the home, especially when they have young children?

The person leaving a child accessible gun loaded should be criminally charged.

Not likely, since it makes perfect sense.

Swimming pools should be banned if kids can't breathe water.

Weekly Joe? CDC says that in 2010 there were 0.2 per 100,000 deaths by accidental discharge in the 1 - 4 year old population and 0.1 per 100,000 deaths by accidental discharge in the 5 - 14 year old population. That includes 'accidentally on purpose' discharges by people OVER those ages.

At those rates it would take a full 26 Million children under 5 or a full 52 million kids under 14 to make a once a week news story. There were ~61 million total residents under 15 in the US Census of 2010, slightly more males than females. Your claim doesn't show as valid in my quick look at published data. The rate is higher for ALL other causes of death relevant to that age cohort, including sports injuries and slipping in the bathtub and excluding altzheimers and cirrhosis of the liver caused by acute alcoholism.

Firearms around children is safer then children around a "Bouncie House"

Just check out the insurance coverage!!

I have! A shooting range is cheaper to insure then having one inflatable for kids to play in.

By the way , if anybody is looking for a S&W smith you`d have to look far and wide to find someone better than Denny at Sand Burr Gun Ranch in Indiana.
