Here's a suggestion that helps me.

Don’t shoot me, though, because this tale involves skeet shooting. It works over and over again, whenever needed - to get to sleep initially or to return to it after waking. Here goes...

Lay on your back and join your hands together over your head. Close your eyes (a sleep mask is better - perfect darkness is a bonus). Take three to five deep cleansing breaths, exhaling through the mouth. Imagine a skeet field and bring to mind as many details about it as you can. Then imagine yourself on station one. Vision mounting the gun, your stance, your hat and shooting gloves - as many details as possible. Call for the high house and see yourself smoking the target at just the correct spot. Then, take a breath and vision the details about the low house. Call and shoot at exactly the correct moment. See that clay smoke. Prepare yourself and see all the details. Then, call for the pair and bust both clays to smithereens. Unload the hulls, put them away, lower your gun, and move away from station one.

Do the same for station two. Vision as much detail as possible and be sure to watch the black smoke.

I can usually get to station four in my head before I’m conked out. If I awake for anything I return to bed and start over again.

This is a sleep aid that also has power to improve skeet shooting performance. Using a trap event doesn’t have the same impact because you never know where your target is flying. In skeet, every flight path is the same and your position determines the presentation.

One final sleep note. When you have to get up during the night, make a point to NOT open both eyes. At most open one partially. Sounds crazy but it works. It seems easier to get BACK to sleep if you haven’t actually fully awakened.

I do the same thing with playing a round of golf in my mind. Visualize every shot on every hole. It focuses your mind on one task and helps you forget about all the worries that are keeping you awake. I find it hard to think of anything else while shooting or playig golf. Good escape. Mark

Oregunner, What happens when you DO think of something else at golf or shooting? You sure don't need to tell me as I'm living proof. :(

I find that bonking the old lady helps, as long as she skips that chatty period and lets me just roll off and go to sleep.

I do much the same but with my past 13 years of fishing trips to the Gouin Resevoir in Quebec with my buddy, since killed in a car crash 11 years ago . Start out with sleeping on the cheap foam mattress , then the boat ride to the first honey hole then the next and next . I`m usually asleep before our walleye shore lunch . Great way to remember the old days with friends . Happens just about every night !!!

What you are describing is called "transendental meditation." I have used the golf example for years! It improves your game...takes your mind off troubles...teaches focus...and has helped me through many dental appointments! Jack

    serv,

With my short fuse, if I start thinking about those shooters(which I have shot on squads with some), my BP starts rising and I'm wide awake. I guess results vary.

I find a couple of stiff drinks does wonders for sleep problems.

Drink one or two cups Chamomile after dinner without Viagra.

Or take Viagra with the right partner will help you sleep well afterward.
