Hodgdon lists several 1125 fps 1 oz loads. Have any of you used these for singles? If so, how do they work? I am looking for a low recoil load but one that is effective for singles and first shot on doubles, but don't want to go below 1oz. Has anyone tried 1oz @ 1100?

By the book (I've never chronographed them) mine are 1150 fps.

    They work fine.

    25 fps slower won't matter.

1 oz. @ 1100 - 1125 work just fine for singles and first doubles shot...use 8s or 8.5 shot. I like Clays powder, Downrange XL-1 wads, and Winchester 209s. Have run many straights with this load. Best Regards, Ed

Another nod for 1125, 1 oz. I have shot a few from 27 in the summer and broke birds.

They work fine. My 1-ounce loads clock around 1150, and they crush birds. They have 17.4 grains of Clays, Winchester 209 primers and a Windjammer XL-1 wad in an STS shell.

If pigkiller's loads clock at 1150 fps, then mine probably ARE closer to 1100 fps!

I use similar components, but much less powder.

Heaps of guys use sub 1200 fps 1 oz loads here, great for the shoulder, and especially great for the first bird in doubles.

I'm sure you guys would be more than fine with them!

Fio616, 16.0gr Clays, CB1100, 1oz #8s in a AA hull. Soft shooting load. Some people use 16.0gr Promo instead of Clays and get the same result. Chichay

I love shooting 17.1 grs of Clays. Soft shooting and they provide great target breaks. Nice for doubles too.

I shoot 7/8oz @ 1135fps out of my 20 ga. It works fine for skeet, singles, both shots at doubles (LM and M) and sporting (LM and IM). Adding 1/8 oz in 12 ga. will just make it better.

14 gns of 700x and 1 oz with a nice recoil reducer and you get smashed targets with nearly no recoil. Love them. Tried them from 26 yard and not so much luck.):

I also use 16 grains of clays or promo 1100 to 1125. I really can't see how faster load could break birds much better.

Thanks for the info. I'll be shooting these loads in an O/U, not an auto. I have tightwad powder on hand and see that Hodgdon recommends 16.0 gr to equal 1125fps with F616, CB1100 wad. Since I would like to try some 1100 fps loads also, how much would you reduce the powder charge to drop the velocity from 1125 to 1100?

An older shooter was shooting a load so soft and quiet, and breaking targets at 16 very well, that I asked him if it was 7/8 oz. He said no, it's a 1 1/8th. load with Clays....."how much Clays"?...."I forgot the grains but it's #27 Mec powder bushing". I looked it up later, #27 throws approx. 14.5grs.

I use Rio subsonics in the summer and they are great. They are of coarse a factory load. They are 1 oz 1050 fps loads and smoke them with the best.
