To Big Jack and everyone else, I say, Thank You and Happy Birthday!

To cubancigar2000, I want to ask, how heavy was your deuce gear with all that chain mail? Kidding! :) Wow - 47 years ago would be 1962 - I was 4 years old. I gotta tell you it was an odd feeling having Marines working for me before I retired who weren't even alive when I joined and they were already pinning on Sergeant.

I've mentioned before that I had the honor of serving at Albany with Jack Torrance, a man who joined in 1948, made the long march back to Hungnam, a few tours in Vietnam, retired as a MGySgt in 1978 (Acting SgtMaj of ILSD), then served as a Logistics Specialist until 1998, retiring with 50 years total service. Since I joined in 1975, I had the further honor of serving while Jack was still on active duty, though I never met him until long after. Back to Jack in a moment.

I once had the honor of meeting Major Gene Duncan, who is the author of (among others) a series of books titled "Green Side Out" "Brown Side Out" "Run in Circles" and "Scream and Shout." All were subtitled "Marine Corps Sea Stories" and they were sometimes touching, sometimes heartbreaking, but most of the time funny as all hell.

Anyway, I'm in the office one day before Jack retired teaching a young Sergeant how to write an SL-4 for the AN/TPS-63 Radar System at my desk, which was right behind Jack's desk. When we took a bit of a break and I was telling this young Devil Dog about Duncan's books, I mentioned that Duncan had enlisted in the Corps in 1951. Before I could start my next sentence, Jack yelled out, "BOOT!" :) If you don't see the humor in that, then I guess you had to be there. :)

Since Jack went to boot camp three years after WWII and then made the long march back to Hungnam, he truly was, at least in my eyes, "Old Corps." :)

If you call me "boot" I won't complain! :)

    Barfin,

THANK YOU! I found my platoon, 2022! I stepped onto the little yellow footprints on 4 Nov 75 and we graduated on 28 Jan 1976. I noticed that there are very platoons in the months surrounding my time, so I wonder who added those pictures... Seem worth investigating. Thanks again!
