I shoot once or twice a month. I have never seen anyone shoot from the 27 yard distance or and distance other than 16 yards. Do many people shoot from other than the 16 yard distance? Is handicap shooting usually only at tournaments?
As of July 1st, the ATA has eliminated all handicap events since the two yard reduction failed to help anyone. Now everyone shoots from the sixteen, all shooters who were on the 27 have to shoot with opposite hand-right handed shooters shoot left handed, left hand shooters will shoot right handed. This will make for fair and balanced competition. If this fails, blindfolds are the next option. Good luck and good shooting.
I live in rural Vermont and many questions that seem dumb to a lot of you folks are actually come up with new shooters. ATA is not very big around here and a lot of clubs don't bother to throw regulation targets. At least the aluminum targets we can re-use. And use the club washer to clean wads for re-use.
ZZoom has the right idea, but it should work like this. All shooters shoot from the 16 year line, regardless of their handicap yardage. However, they have to be standing on their proper yardage marker when they call for the target.
For example, a 27 yard shooter calls for the target, and then has to run
11 yards before he can fire his gun. Any shooter who trips and falls and cannot fire his gun is eligible for an Allowable Failure to Fire. However,if any shooter overruns the 16 yard line before he fires, the target is LOST.
Besides making it more fair, this will put a premium on physical conditioning and athleticism previouly missing in our sport.
On the serious side. At a number of clubs I shoot at all I see is 16-yard shooting. Maybe at the end of the day you will see someone shooting handicap, but that is an exception.
Handicap Shooting .... were the big money is in all big shoot.
