Some of my friends have gotten in to potshooting and started to rag on me because I havn't. I would like to beat them out on the line but am unwilling to stick 12ga. artillery rounds into my P-gun. Since I blew all my extra funds on my gun is there a relativly inexpensive gun that would hold up, take a beating, and make a good dedicated potshooting gun? Thanks in advance for any advice and replies.

If you start, you will be hooked. I would suggest a Beretta auto or 1100, been shooting beretta 303's at games with some pretty big loads for 25 years

The Winchester Model 12 has always been the gun of choice in my extensive pot shooting career. It has always been used more than any other gun. I used a 30 inch barrel. Don't forget, these. targets, at least the ones I shot in SoCal were set as high, wide, and fast as they could throw them. I also used a green hi-vis site as the shootoffs were often way way back almost in darkness.

Flipchop, while you're thinking on it. It's worth knowing that speed over about 1400fps doesn't help all that much. At long distances use bigger shot if you can (6's and 5's) and maybe more of it 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 load. bigger shot will keep it's breaking power further out than 7 1/2's. Winchester superfield usually does it fo me at around 1350 fps with about 1 1/8 of 6's till we get way far back. Lots of luck with it and you don't know the fun you are missing out on

Remington 870 TC or 870 Comp with a 30" .745 bore is your best bet.

Reliable and economical and they just keep going and going and going...

If you can find one, the old Beretta Mark IV was a hell of a games gun.

If you get a break open, get 34" barrels, 30" on autos or pumps, and no porting. You may end up shooting some heavy loads of slow powder, those and short barrels and porting, and shooting from behind the lights lead to some impressive muzzle flash!

Don't buy a different gun for this. Just use your line loads for the stuff on 27 or closer. And for your second shot or way back loads try 32 to 33 grains of IMR 4756 in a Federal paper with a WAA12R wad copy with 1 and 1/4 ounces of 5's or 6's. Shooters have been doing it for years. Pressures are not that bad. Check out the Hogdon reloading mannual, there are several recipes with certain powders that do not exceed the pressure of standard line loads, if you use the right powder.

Slayer, pot shooting consists of participants buying into each game. The winner or winners share the proceeds of the cash pot set aside for that game. Games are essentially elimination games with the rules varying from one to the other. Distances shot begin at the 27 and depending on the facility might go as far back as 50yds or better. It's a lot of fun but your standard trap handicap loads won't cut it. Targets are often hit at 100yds. and beyond.

Try this...load your normal 3 dram 1 1/8 oz. load but use copper plated #6 shot. Use your P gun...no need for anything else! It will work from 50 yards...guaranteed! And will smoke them better than any hot load, IMO.
