Which is the bulkier powder - Green Dot or Am. Select?

Have a load that's a little too tight with Green Dot but the drops would be the same as far as grs. are concerned - both @ 21 grs. for the load. If Am. Select is not as bulky as Green Dot, thinking Am. Select might make a better fit.

    Thousghts?

I love Green Dot for its soft shooting loads. I use 20 gr in AAs or STSs for 1200 fps, and 20.5 with Gold Medal plastics.

American Select is a little less bulky than green dot

the above website gives a general density based on grains in different bushings.

always confirm powder drops with an accurate scale

Thanks, Shrek - that's what I was looking for.

Any opinions on Am. Select for 1 1/8 oz. loads @ 1250fps?

I used it some years ago but never liked it as well as Green Dot. Seemed to kick harder, developed more pressure too, so back to Green Dot and haven't changed since. Only thing I like better is PB, and it;s just too darned expensive.

for 1250 fps I would go with green dot and not american select

A downrange xl-118 wad should fit in a rem hull with that recipe just fine

If you want 1250 fps and 1 1/8 oz. of 7 1/2's, a much better powder choice would IMO be Alliant Unique. Pressures are generally in the 8000 - 9000 psi range and charge weights are in the 23 - 24.5 grain range depending on hull, primer and wad. Games shooters have used this load for years as the first shot (call bird) from just about any range.

I'd change the wad. Changing the powder puts you in a whole 'nother universe. Not sayin one powder is better than the other for your purposes. But if you're happy with the current recipe, with the exception of the crimp, there are better ways to correct that than switching powders, IMO.

FWIW, 21 grains of Green Dot should load and crimp just fine with a variety of wads in an STS/GC hull.

Actually, AS is a bit bullkier than GB, but it packs better.

Thanks all for the chart comments. Yeah, I find it useful, and, BTW, I think the LEE Perfect Powder measure (that came with the chart) is pretty perfect, itsownself.

4th ... I'd pay attention to Mike Campbell. If you don't like your crimps w/21gn of either GD or AS, you have the wrong wad.

Ed Ward is also right, U or U makes a real sweet back-fence load.

This is an updated - if not the newest/latest & greatest VMD chart.

Thanks Goat, and I have found a solution - Fed. hull (Top Gun) with 22 grs. of GD with the DRV wad and RXP with the Rem. wad.@ 21 grs. Shot them both today @ 5 stand and they performed well.

4th, keep this between you & me, and don't let Shooting Coach hear you say nothing, because he don't like to worry abt hull supplies, but the best answer to a LOT of reloading issues is Miscellaneous Eurotrash Hulls.

    Good everything worked for you.
