I haven't been to the Grand since it was held in Vandalia in the 90's. How does it compare now to the way it used to be. Are there still factory gun teams, gunsmiths etc? I remember watching a girl (beautiful girl) with either the Beretta or Perazzi company checkering a stock by hand with people standing around her and her hands were working like a CNC machine. Also Krieghoff had a master engraver working on a reciever - amazing. I had 2 1100 trigger jobs done by the Remington gunsmiths for about $6 or $12 each. All the major manufacturing company had their own display buildings - even the reloading companys were there....... and private vendors everywhere.

And I almost forgot - Budweiser tents everywhere!

How does it compare now at Sparta?

If you go to shoot Sparta blows Vandalia out of the water. If you go
to party you would like Vandalia better.

I wasn't talking about partying - more interested in the things to see there when not shooting.

Speaking of "beautiful girls", I was at the Grand around 98' or 99', when a this georgeous blonde sat next me on the practice bench. When I got up to get my shells, I noticed she had "Alaska" stitched on the back of her shooting vest.

When it was our turn on the trap, she spit her chew out, and ran'em. True story! What a woman!

I live 30 miles from Sparta & went to Vandalia 5 times also. I really miss Vandalia but obviously enjoy having the Grand in my back yard. As stated, the shooting fields are great. The vendors & amount of guns were better in Vandalia in my opinion. The vendors in Sparta are great, what I meant was there were more vendors in Vandalia. It really is apples & oranges trying to compare the two. Just go & have a good time. Colonel

Big place from what I hear, a lot less shooters and declining more every year according to the numbers posted ... (Just a fact, nothing more intended) WPT ... (YAC) ...

The Cardinal Center is fast becoming the Trapshooting mecca and is as close to the old Vandalia feeling as you'll get.

I liked Vandalia better for more places to eat and stay.

Sparta better for the parking and plenty of room.

Either place the motels rip your #ss on rates.

If I were asked I would say that Sparta is actually TOO BIG ! At Vandalia you would bump into people you knew while walking around. Sparta is so damn big that it kind of takes the personal touch out or the Grand.

    Two simple questions.

Does Sparta have ONE beer tent?
    Might it have bingo?

These two attractions might get my wife to attend with me.

    Thanks

I thought it was going to be slow on TS.com. The Vandalia Grand had a younger Pheasantmaster playing cards under the awning at the locker room or beer tent usually with the Leo guy. Now we here that Pheasantmaster spends most of his time in an RV. Something about a Maryland girl???????

Both places are great. Both are different. History is in Vandalia, new history being made at Sparta.

Neither has the old Christy's Alpine Inn,or Little York Tavern any more. Nothing like watching Bob Schultz playing pool at the LYT!

If you want to go to the Grand, It is in Sparta.
