I have a throbbing pain in the joint of my middle finger. Not really swollen or inflamed, just stiff and sore as hell. A co-worker suggests that it may be gout. Does this sound like gout? It's kind of distressing as I play guitar a little, and I can't use my left hand for fretting with my sore finger. Any ideas?

Sounds like it may be.Try this, it's cheap, very effective if it is gout and it's harmless. Buy a couple of bottles of black Cherry juice at the grocer. Make sure it's pure cherry juice. Drink 8 oz twice daily for a couple of days. lay off the red meat, beer and aspirin. If it's gout it will clear up. I promise you.

If it's gout, aspirin will make it worse.

It probably is gout. I get it sometimes in my right hand in the joint that is your middle finger. I take Endocin(endomythicin) and that works great. Don't take aspirin, as it compounds the pain and swelling. Black Cherry Juice does good also, and is cheaper that getting a prescription. Good Luck, Charlie

One side effect to the allopurinol is itching, or a slight rash. I got it on my legs, below my knees, so I quit taking it. Itching gone. Charlie

I neglected the finger joint condition and it froze up permantly. Wants to do it again in my big joint middle left finger and I fight it. I have my most recent bout of gout corrected now. Foot is good, ankles good, swelling going away in ankles and calfs.

Get Indocin, cut way back on red meat and other high purine items. It will subside.

I have gone on a 4 ounce red meat a day and vegetarian 2 meals a day.

Feeling good now. But a 2+ month battle brought on by OD on PEA SOUP.

Thanks, everyone. I'm headed out to purchase some black cherry juice, and if that doesn't work, I'll go to the doc. I don't drink alcohol, but I drink a bunch of coffee. I hope I don't have to give that up...I'm a rotating shift worker, and caffeine is my best friend!

I second the cherry juice. I had gout bad in my 40's. Stopped taking the pills and started eating one cherry yogurt a day. Haven't been bothered since. Also avoid liver and asparagus. Not too hard to do in my opinion.. Rich

My experience with WEBMD is that they sell your comuter soul to anyone with a nickel. Try the above site. I've searched a lot and this one seems simple to understand.

Pain and stiffness diminishing a little. Must be the cherry juice. I may be able to pick up the guitar in a couple of days. Thanks for your help, everyone.

P.S. Lab results will be back Monday or Tuesday. Doc says it's probably gout.
