AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas State Board of Education adopted a social studies and history curriculum Friday that amends or waters down the teaching of the civil rights movement, religious freedoms, America's relationship with the U.N. and hundreds of other items.

Sounds to me Texas is doing all right. Unemployment rate in Texas - 8.2%, national average - 9.9%. Texas no state income tax, most other states - stick it in you SSS and break it off.

Schools books? Have any of you guys picked up a history book/social studies book in the last 25 years??? What a bunch of commie BS: Marx, Lenin, Stalin may as well have written the crap.

I applaud the effort in Texas to reign in the BS.

Couple of things to bear in mind while blasting the Texas education system:
Texas has more juniors taking the SAT than any other state. According to a Ball State study on the relevance of state SAT averages, the top 10 states have 8% of their students take the SAT. The more students that take the SAT in a state, the lower the average scores.

Also, there is a known gap between government drop out reporting vs. independent drop out reporting. The problem with the Texas drop out rate is that they aren't lying about their drop out rate like most states do.

I'm not a fan of a lot of Texas education policies, but I'm also not sure what the SAT averages and the drop out rate have to do with the social studies curriculum. Guess I'm just another dumb Texan.

What makes the Texas averages appear so inferior is not soley the curriculum or the "educational system". Texas has many illegals in the school system who have no intention of learning or performing academic tasks. In many areas over 50% of the students are on free or subsidized school lunch programs and they have to hire spanish speaking food service workers. If you would take that factor out of the equation, I believe the statistics would be far more favorable.

My wife works in a study lab at the high school here. The lab is for under-achieving students who need help in their studies and testing. Without trying to sound racist, if you spent a day in her lab you would understand why Texas has a low average among the entire student population. A few who come to her lab really want help but most are sent there because the regular teachers don't have time for students who don't really give a damn or care to learn a new language. It is a sad view of the times we live in and doesn't bode well for our future. If the Liberals ever really get the under-achievers of our time to come to the polls, in-mass, we are done as a great and prosper nation. Some, on here, think Glen Beck is a nut but he has been 100% correct over the last four or five years. He has just been far enough ahead of the curve that, to some, he is a conspiracy nut. Its a shame that everyone knows what is right is right. But the far left will not submit to it. But if Obama and his henchmen achive their goals, them liberal will be the first ones throwed under the truck. FOR SURE.

Have you ever looked at a map of the world? Look at Texas
with me just for a second. That picture, with the
Panhandle and the Gulf Coast , and the Red River
and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as
    anything ever will be.

    As soon as anyone anywhere
in the world looks at it they know what it is.
It's Texas . Pick any kid off the
street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in
the dirt and he'll know what it is. What happens
if I show you a picture of any other state? You
might get it maybe after a second or two, but who
else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir
    any feelings in you?

In every man, woman and child on this planet, there
is a person who wishes just once he could be a
real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride off
in a pickup. There is a little bit of Texas in

Texas is the Alamo . Texas is 183 men standing in a church, fighting
for freedom, facing thousands of Mexican nationals. Men who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and
die for the cause of freedom.

We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James
Bowie and Davy Crockett, and do you know why?
Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes.

John Wayne paid to do the movie himself . That is the Spirit of Texas

Texas is Sam Houston capturing Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana at
    San Jacinto .

Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett
    and Sam Houston National Forests

Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big Bend

Texas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields and the National Gun Club in the Texas Hill Country.

Texas is floating the rivers of the Hill Country on a hot summer day.

Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the Gulf Coast of South Texas ..

Texas is beaches you can drive on and have many memorable bon-fires with close friends. Texas is that warm feeling you get when someone asks where you're from.

Texas is the shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas.

Texas is Mexican foods like nowhere else, not even Mexico . Texas
is chicken fried steak and world famous Bar-B-Q.

is the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bass Hall, the
Ballpark in Arlington and the Astrodome. (guess
    now the Reliant Stadium too).

    Texas is
larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Ann
Richards, Jimmy Borum, Denton Cooley, Willie Nelson, Buddy
Holly, Gene Autry, Audie Murphy, Tommy Lee Jones,
Waylon Jennings, Farrah Fawcet, Janis Joplin,
Sandra Bullock, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Landry,
Eva Longoria, Darrell Royal, ZZ Top, Eric
Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Gary Sherrod, Nolan Ryan, Sam Rayburn,
Howard Hughes, George H.. W. Bush, Lyndon B.
Johnson, and let's not forget GEORGE STRAIT-
PANTERA, the Big Bopper, Tex Ritter, George Jones,
Clay Walker, Mark Chestnut, Norris Mobbs, Britt Robinson, to name
    ONLY a few.

    Texas is great companies like
Dell Computer, Texas Instruments, EDS and Compaq, Valero
Whataburger, Southwest Airlines , Bell Helicopter
and LOCKHEED MARTIN AEROSPACE, Home of the F-16
Jet Fighter and the JSF Fighter.

    Texas is NASA.

Texas is huge herds of cattle, beautiful horses and miles of crops.
Texas is home to the world famous King Ranch.
Texas is home to the most amazing sunsets of gold.

Texas is skies blackened with doves and fields full of deer.

    Texas is a place
where towns and cities shut down to watch the
local high school football game on Friday nights
and for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and
for the night In Old San Antonio River Parade in
    San Antonio.

To drive across Texas is to drive 1/3 the way across the
    United States .

    Texas is ocean beaches,
deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies,
    and modern cities

If it isn't already in Texas , you probably don't need

Texas IS NOT part of Mexico!

No one does anything bigger or
better than it's done in Texas

    By federal law,
Texas is the only state in the U.S. That can fly
its flag at the same height as the U.S. Flag.
Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars
and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland , California ,
or Maine , and your state flag, whatever it is,
goes at 17 feet. You fly the Stars and Stripes in
front of anyplace in Texas at 20 feet,
the Lone Star flies at the same height - 20 feet
Do you know why? Because it is the
only state that was a Republic before it became a state

being a Texan is as high as being an American down
here. Our capitol is the only one in the country
that is taller than the capitol building in
Washington , D.C. And we can divide our state into
five states at any time if we wanted to!

    We can
become a republic again at any time the voters of
Texas choose, and we included these things as part
of the deal when we came on.

Texas even has its own power grid!!

And - Did I mention we have the Live music capitol of
    the world?

If you are a REAL TEXAN, you won't even need to be told to pass this on.

Not bad for a bunch that can't pass the SAT. If you ever choose to going back to being a republic let me know, I would like to apply for residency.

Texas gets Arizona off the front page. Does the Texas Governor consider himself to be an American first, or a Texan first?

Texas or Mississippi will have to go some to get as worthless as the liberal vacuum suburban Ann Arbor, Michigan school system my grandchildren are in - liberal, big dollar havens for potheads - I'm talking about the teachers.

I've never seen such slackassed, do nothings in my life. Stupid rule upon stupid rule, and a curriculum that is used for coffee coasters. Did I say I'm upset with the Michigan school(less) system?

Actually, failing schools are part and parcel of the Liberal-Gramsci blueprint. Brave New World and "take your Soma" aren't just a movie plot.

A former art teacher used his West Texas field to carve out a protest about the Obama administration’s proposed overhaul of the health care system.

Sam Bates recently plowed some weeds and left behind the message “Say no to Obama!” that’s best viewed from the air.

Bates said he had some “free time” and wanted to offer his unhappiness with what’s been going on in Washington.

“This is a sign of frustration,” Bates told KCBD-TV on Monday.

“You know, it’s not so much Obama, but just some of the things he’s done recently with the health bill he’s trying to pass through, and it’s just as much Republican and Democrats fault in the House and the Senate that won’t stand up to some of the things. That’s basically what’s frustrated me,” Bates said.

The Obama administration has been pushing its proposal to reshape the $2.5 trillion health system.

Bates said he dug out his message for the benefit of pilots flying in and out of Lubbock.

“I thought, maybe some pilots flying from here to Dallas would get a good chuckle,” he said.

Bates said his friend who is a crop duster helped him put aerial photos of the field on the Internet.

The sign in the lake bed will disappear when the season changes.

“Once winter hits it will kill these weeds, and who knows, maybe next year I’ll have something else,” said Bates.

It’s there until winter! Love it.

Texas' SAT scores are more a function of their demographics, not their educational system.
