I have just started shooting a remington 11-87 and have noticed some powder residue on the exterior of the barrel just above the gas ports. I have looked at the O ring inside and it seems fine. Do all remingtons do this? or is it a seal problem? just woundering no problems cycling but annoying to clean.

Its normal. All gas operated semi-autos have an exhaust port somewhere. Berettas have a louvered metal cover on the forearm that get the same residue. After about 300 rounds thru my 1100 Trap this weekend its getting a pretty heavy coating.
