John, Are both of those rifles ones designed by "Carbine Williams" who designed the .30 cal. carbine for the US Army during WWII. There was an interesting story about him in Shotgun Sports Magazine. Biff

The model 8 is the gun that Carbine Williams used to modify and test his new design idea

The article said he designed the .22 caliber Remington 550 which had a floating chamber which would let it shoot as a semiauto shorts as well as long rifle bullets. He worked on this design while in solitary confinement while in prison.

James Stewart played him in the movie about his life, "Carbine Williams!" biff
