The wife and I are seriously thinking about a short trip to Mackinac Island from Iowa and I was wondering what would be a good route to take south from there. We will be circling around Lake Michigan and we would like to see some of the good sights in Michigan as we pass through.

    Thanks, Bill

The ferry across Lake Michigan is beautiful and you miss all of the hassle getting through the greater Chicago area. Then you can continue north from Ludington to the straits and to the island. When you leave go down U.S. 23 at least as far as Oscoda or Tawas to see some of our great shoreline. The jumping off point for the ferry is Manitowoc Wis. Bill in MI

If you take the ferry to Ludington, follow the coast North via Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs on your way to Mackinaw city to take the ferry to the island. You will enjoy the beutifull coastline, great food and eclectic towns on our "third coast". Happy Travels, Jess

Hit the wine country on old mission pointe near Traverse City. Click on the link. The Cherry Festival was last weekend in Traverse City so the crowds will be down. This would be on your way southwest from Mackinac City along Lake MI. You don't say if you are just planning to take in scenery of if you will leave time for some short stops. There is actually a lot to do up that way. Nye's Trap Range in Kingsley throws some pretty good targets and I have yet to have a bad time there. They are just south of Traverse City. They have a 2 day registed shoot this weekend. The Howard Township Conservation Club in Niles has two shoots this month and you could catch them when making the turn to go south around Lake MI. Registered shoot July 9 and the 16th and 17th of July.

After you leave the Island you can drive across the North end of Lake Michigan and go down thru Wisconsin. Hit Green Bay and Lambuea Field. Great scenery and a lot of NFL history.
