Low and reverse use the same clutches so the cause probably is in the valve body or somewhere else that affects oil flow. As 99 suggested, checking the line pressures will tell you for sure.

maclellan: if you have any kind of mechanical ability, jack vehicle up and place jack stands under it for your safety. Remove trans pan. Check all valve body bolts to see if they have loosened up or one is possibly broken. Sounds as if it is spinning planetarys backwards which is bleed thru at valve body. This usually happens at seam where valve body attaches. If you need to have someone look at it try finding someone in you area that does trans. Don

One of our customers bought this mess on a whim. Very poorly done throw together. We really do not work on such older vehicles and especially science products. We are trying to determine if we really want to get involved. He brought it in also for a dead missfire. turns out to have a dead hole, bad valve. Customer says he just wants to redo the one cylender......HUH. Yeah really not sure if we want to get involved. Thing needs a motor and some other safty issues. I personally do not want to marry this job. He just doesnt seem to get it. fix the one dead hole the next weakest shows its face. Hey its RED and SHINEY BABY. We work on mostly cars 3 to 10 years old. After that we pick and choose. Thank you guys.

Safely see if it tries to move while slowly racing the engine in neutral. I have had this happen when the direct clutches are worn and try to "weld" themselves together.

    Lots of other options, too!

I also agree that the owner is too cheap to let you repair it properly, so it might be best to let it go down the road.
