Should I bring my fishing gear? What's in the lakes? Can you fish from shore? Do I need a Illinois Fishing License?

blade--you will have to get a temp IL fishing License. I think you can buy them at the IDNR building(its #510 in the vendor buildings) on the grounds. If not Sparta Wal Mart has them for sure. The lakes are full of Bluegill, Crappie, Largemouth Bass and numerous Catfish species as well as Lake Trout but they are seasonal. The fishing out there is very good but with the heat has been slow. Its old strip cuts so fishing from the banks will be tough but there is some spots. I've only fished it from a boat. I do know some of the campers at previous shoots have caught fish from the bank so its do-able.--Matt

I wish this was my fish, but I would leave your fishing tackle home and visit Kentucky Lake if you want crappies!

TNCoach, Ky lake is a great place to fish for crappies!! I know of a couple spots near Sparta thats produced some truly BIG crappies and bass also!! Here's a picture of a few that came from the strip mined ponds!! Those fish are much bigger than my pic portrays! Last year at the Grand, we had a huge fish fry from the lands bounty, another one planned for this year too!

That Crappie would feed a family of four! Isn't Lake Baldwain a good fishing lake? It seems years ago it was one of the hottest Bass lakes around because of the warm water discharge from the power plant. Kentucky Lake? One of these days. I use to be a Bass Slayer years ago until I took up the "cheap" sport of Trap Shooting. One day I'll just hire a guide at Kentucky Lake and fish for 3 days. I drive over the dam next Wen. on the way to Sparta. Nice Bass display also!

Baldwin Power Plant Lake is a good one for Bass, Striper and Catfish. They have tried numerpus times to introduce Crappie to Baldwin Lake with no luck. The warm water messes with their breeding habits. The water stays warm year around especially over around the discharge.

I thought that if you were fishing, you needed to mention, 7 1/2s or 8's, How good Cardinal is, How bad Sparta Is, How smart Dr. Longshot is, and how screwed up the ATA is. Then there would be lots of bites.
