Often on these forums a question of powder identification comes up. I'm of the school that if you don't know what it is...throw it out.

But...if you use it for "fertilizer", be sure you spread it out. I've got a nice 12 inch diameter brown spot in my lawn that is still there two years later. Strong stuff, that powder...

The high nitrogen levels in powder will burn vegetation if applied in concentrated areas.

You mean there's something that burns lawn grass more than a female labrador?

HMB, ammonium nitrate was made to be a furtilizer, but it's also a high explosive (detonation)

Actually ammonium nitrate isn't explosive, it's an accelerator

I doubt if they use it in gun powder it is extremely corrosive, but they might

Catpower, If you check what the government defines as explosives it lists ammonium nitrate as a explosive. Hundreds of thousands of tons are used annually for quarrying and road construction and the vod is 12 to 15,000 fps. Even fertilizer grade is listed as explosive.

Used it to blow up beaver dams, works great with a couple sticks!!

Great Ice melter also, and a lot cheaper then buying the Ice-melter at the hardware and home depots!!

Get it near any Metal, RUST will occur in very short order!!

Toolmaker, It does accelerate the explosion so I guess they can call it an explosive, they probably consider oxygen an explosive

But without fuel, it doesn't do anything

Until it's cations are attracted to the anions in the ground then it becomes fertilizer
