I shoot 1 oz reloads for practice and singles...BUT...love 1 1/8 Nitros for any tournament shooting. IMO...nothing I have found destroys handicap targets like they do ( I know, I know...heavy shells are not needed). However...they do get pricey. Thinking about reloading for similar performance with Nitro hulls and Green Dot powder. I know its easy to lookup dozens of Green Dot recipes that push 1250 fps but that doesnt mean they fit well in the a Rem hull or perform as expected.

So.... whats your favorite fast handicap 1 1/8 Green Dot combo?

    Mark

p.s. dont worry...I will verify pressures, etc., etc. before I even think about it.

I like 20.3 grains of Green Dot under a WAA12 wad in AA hull and W209 to get close to a Nitro copy. The Alliant manual does not show all combinations of Winchester components in Remington Hulls or vice versa. You can email them to see if they have that data or will make a recommendation.

I have chronoed this load on January 4 and believe me, it is a handicappers dream. There are lots of HCP shooters out there that use this load or a similar one.

    493 gr. of shot (7.5) = 1 1/8 oz.

    Rem hull
    WW primer
    19.5 gr. Green Dot
    Down Range VERSALITE Wad

Individual shots were very consistent on a string of 10 shots. Average Velocity was 1238.

    Since you mentioned Nitro 27....

The closest load to actually duplicating it is:

Nitro 27/STS hull, Rem 209P primer, Rem TGT12 wad, 1 1/8 oz Rem magnum shot, 18.0 gr of Hodgdon TiteGroup powder.

20.0 - 20.5 grains of Green Dot, Remington Hull, Winchester W209 primer, Rem Figure 8 wad or clone, 1 1/8 oz of hard shot. 20.0 grains is listed at 8600 PSI on Alliant's site. They also list the velocity at 1200 fps. My chronograph puts them at 1225 with a cylinder bore choke. Last time I measured some Nitros they ran about 1240. I also use the CCI209M primer and a Versalite wad listed at 1200 fps using 20.0 gains, velocity measured by my chronograph is 1220. Add a grain of powder and you're near 1250. Alliant lists 21.5 grains at 1250 fps and 10,200 PSI, which is just over my self imposed limits of 10,000. It's a great wad and the 20.0 - 21.0 grain combination seems to work very well in cold weather. If you want 1250 fps at reasonable pressures, go to Unique. I'd much rather change powders than push one near it's limits. Unique will give you some surprising results for 1250 fps loads while keeping pressures reasonable.

AA hull,W209,Fig.8 wad,22 gr. Green Dot, 1250 fps with 10,300 chamber pressure.

(edited: the load above was taken directly from Alliants web-site yesterday)

Since we don't know all of murks339s ingredients maybe we should ask where he found his recipe and other particulars before condemning the man?

Page 206 of the RCBS shotshell reloading handbook shows, STS/Nitro hull, fio616 primer Rem RXP12 wad 1 1/8oz shot=1250fps and 9,100psi. recoil not bad, and destroys 27yd targets. Chrono shows a shade higher speed on average about 1262fps-10 shot average. Bill

On the Alliant web site, 22 gr of Green Dot with an RXP12 wad is the only load shown. 9,900 psi/1250fps.

This is a great performing handicap load. 21.5 grains of green dot, Fed 209A, Downrange Versalite wad, 1-1/8 oz. magnum 7.5 shot, I like to load the wad with 55 pounds of wad pressure in the Nitro 27 hull.

Deleted. Read Quack Shot below. I took the load out a newer book but it may not be correct.

It's better to check with the manufacture if there is any question at all!

I'd be careful about using "Printed" Green Dot data from years ago. There was a "purge" of some incorrect or "suspicious" data from the Alliant site several years ago. Unfortunately, once a book is printed, they can't magically correct it if it's found to be incorrect. Double check old data against their site or give them a call. Some of it included data for Fiocchi 616 primers, but there were a number of loads that they pulled. Most of it had charge weights over 22 or 23 grains. A quick call is worth the effort to find out. There were several threads on TS.com and a few other sites about it at the time.

This si my favortie load in an STS using GD.

    CCI209M

    20.5 Green Dot

    RXP12

    1.125 hard shot

It won't quite excel to the speed your desiring but I think the loss will not be noticed in breaking ability. Plus is that its a mild shooter.

Not to say a load isn't still listed and valid, but it's best to double check against their online data or give them a call. I'm a little suspicious of any Green Dot load over 22 grains.
