I still remember the cross burnings on the hill behind where I lived in Georgia and he sign on the billboard in North Carolina- Join the KKK

I layed on my stomach on a hill where we had to run hill sprints football practice and watched as they intergrated the High School I attended.

I "felt" something behind me as a friend from the football team and I watched

Turned my head- and about a foot away a 38 was pointed at me-- FBI agent had seen us up there and circled around

Interesting times as Wallace and Maddox gave out axe handles at political rallys

    Regards from Iowa

So how many did you hit from your perch on the hill that day, Chesty?

Check your history...Maddox was the axe handle provider (owned a hardware store in GA), Wallace was not involved in that.

Well I lived in GA but hunted in Alabama at that time, when I was invited by some of my parents friends- was a teenager so maybe those pickup trucks crossed the border and the axe handles had no bounds?

I do remember a kid that was like about 20 still in 9th grade and he considered himself a bad ass. We had a little disagreement in gym class one day

He and his friends shot a guy 79 times that night. Oh it was a white man-- they were drinking at the bottom of his rural driveway and he came out on the porch to yell at them

We had moved down from the north so this stuff was all a lot different.

    Regards from Iowa

    Gene

PS- the kid that they intergrated the school with- just one-- was a nice kid- ran track with him

    Walter F. George High School

They changed the name--- Mr. George apparently would have rolled over had he known the changing demographics of his world

    .

For clarification, those were not axe handles but pick handles.

No for actual clarification--- they did in fact hand out axe handles at some gatherings- political rallies if you will

I lived there- it was advertised ahead of time.

Nearly every pickup had one in the rear gun rack

    Think you are wrong.

    It was pick handles.

As reported and corrected on "The Dick Cavett Show" at the time.

Pick Handles. George Wallace was opposed to Integration but he followed the Law... had nothing to do with the Klan.

George Wallace followed the law? what? A rewrite of history huh?

That is why they had to deploy the 101st Airborne Division to Alabama?

    What about the FBI ?

    I dont think so

It was ax handles-- maybe they ran out of pick handles--

    Regards from Iowa

We lived in Alabama in the mid-60's. Quite an education. Our home was near Flint City a famous Klan gathering spot. Later we lived near Vidor, TX still a Klan rally point to this day. I remember the handles in the pickups. Some folks called them pick axe handles. A story told about the young Wallace in politics. After appealing to black voters and ultimately losing, he famously said "I'll never be out-segged again" referring to his opponent who had openly appealed for segregation. Larry

    Sorry,

If you can't tell a pick handle from an axe handle...

But can't expect much from Yankees passing through on their way to Gulf Shores.

There is a tool called a pickaxe, but it ain't an axe and it don't use an axe handle.

Next thing you know, you will be telling us that catfish filet is fit to eat when everyone knows that fried whole catfish is the only way to go.

Did you never learn to hollar "Roll Tide" ?

You know, the current coach will get credit for three national championships, but they don't count the same as The Bear's.

The Bear did his with the Wishbone.

We have had our daily fun with ancient history.

How about let's talk about today's events.

    For example...

The murderous gangs who have taken over Chicago with no response from elected authorities.

Are they using pick handles or axe handles ?

And did they obtain them legally ?

Wonder if Rahm and Obama will call in the National Guard ?
