1. We have added the ability for anyone to 'bump' threads that they have created. This is mainly useful in the classifieds area where posters constantly bump for sale threads to bring it to the top. This allows them the ability to do that without having to clutter the thread with extra 'TTT' and 'Bump' type posts. To bump it, go inside your thread and click on 'Thread Tools' at the top, then select 'bump'. You can bump only once per 24 hour period.

For more detailed information please see this post: Thread Bump Functionality.

I have a 642 its a +P, you really don't want to shoot a + P in this small of a gun--good personal defense ammo is all you need I've got mine loaded with Hornady 125 gr. XTP--its a good gun & the hammer is accessible for s/a. Its no longer my carry gun since I got the Springfield Arms XDS.

MX21005, Phil has it right. It is a 38 special +p.

If the model number stamped under the barrel is "642" with no dash and number suffix, it is NOT rated for +P ammo.

If the model number is stamped "642-any" number, it IS rated for +P ammo. All Airweight Smiths are modeled like this. The dash followed by a number indicates it is rated for Hi-Test.

As much as 38 SPL ammo has been watered down by the factories, +P ammo is needed in this little gun for defensive use. At $1+ per shot, you are not going to shoot much of this stuff.

Phil... I have a 642, and it's definately double action only. The model 638 does have the hammer exposed for S/A, but, the 642 does not.... Dan Thome (Trap2)

Shooting Coach.... All newer 642's are rated for +P ammo. They will be marked with +P on the barrel.

I believe that some of the older 642's are not marked with +P. If the gun isn't marked, you will need to call S&W with the gun's serial number to find out if it is +P rated or not, however, it is my understanding that they all will handle +P ammo with no problems... Dan Thome (Trap2)

My 642 is definitely not limited to DA---there is a small knurled hammer protruding just about the shroud

Phil, that's because you have a model 638 (or 649, if it's all steel), not a model 642, just like Dan said.

Dan, that's exactly what S&W said when I called them.

This gun kicks like a mule even without +P ammo. I know i have one. Pretty accurate out to 20 yards. Stings your hand. Great carry gun.
