I'll give you the somewhat simplistic descripton that I use when I am counseling folks. Drusen are like little crystals that develop under the fine layer of the retina. The drusen themselves are not really much of a problem, but they can create a space between the retina and the underlying tissue that can allow fluid to seep in there. Unfortunately, if that occurs the body tries to remove the fluid and may scar the area. If the nerve fibers get scarred they no longer work.

The most common area for drusen in older folks is the macula and yes that is the begining of macular degeneration. The macula area is responsible for fine clear central vision and we all hate it when something is going on in the area. Now, here's the important part. Just because you have the drusen does not mean that you will ever experience the possible devastating vision loss that goes with certain types of macular degeneration.

What you should do. See a retina specialist for an evaluation to make sure things are good to start. Second, start taking ocuvite or I-caps vitamins. Third start moitoring your amsler grid at least monthly if you were given one, if not the retina doctor will supply one. Fourth, there are medications available today that may be used when the time is right(avastin) to help with the problem if it is ever required. Finally, keep all your eye appointments when you are told.

    all the best,
    john

By all means, see a retina specialist, soon. Drusen was missed in my eyes and after seeing a retina specialist when it was diagnosed a couple of years later, it was discovered that I have wet macular degeneration in one eye and dry macular generation in the other. I have very blurred vision in the central area of the "wet" (master) eye and have lost depth perception because of it.
