I'd like to make a few of the "exploding targets" like they use at the Olympics for some games at the club. Have any of you had any actual experience at making something like this?

I plan on getting some carpenter's chalk and using a thin cardboard backing but I'm unsure of how to secure the cardboard to the clay. I don't want to end up cleaning off the trap machine after every bird! If you've done something like this what specific glue or tape did you use to secure the backing?

Any real-life experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Hot Glue. You can get a Hot Glue Gun at the discount stores or Wal Mart for just a few bucks.

I just made up a case of green ones, for our pie shoot. First cut some circles of stationary grade paper (copy paper tears on the trap) about a 1/4" larger in diameter than the top dome ridge. Fill the top dome about 3/4 full with carpenters chalk, level the chalk, then run a bead of Elmer's or similar glue on the top ridge, place the paper circle on top, run a rag dipped in a 50-50 mix of the glue and water around the top edge, to fold the edge over. Set them aside to dry. Don't stack them until they are dry. If you want, you can use colored paper to match the target, but I just hit them with tempra paint. Sounds labor intensive but once you get a rhythm going it goes pretty fast. Looks impressive when hit.

I make them for our club Use baby powder it works the best ,plus it makes the course smell good after their hit. Buy construction paper and i use a small amount silicone around the top rim of bird and press construction paper on top ,They work well you can even paint them the same color the clays are ,to make it more interesting .!!!

White Flyer makes flash targets, but they are only International (110mm not 108mm and have a flatter profile than ;regular' targets.

I have no idea if they would make a few cases of flash regular targets, but the international ones are pretty pricey.

As above, making up a case or two (or few) is a good project for the free coffee-bunch on a rainy morning.

I fill dome with blue carpenters chalk.

Use blaze orange duct tape to cover.

I randomly place one in every stack of 125 on the trap, break it, get a free round at the next trapshoot.
Want them to come back don't ya know.

    No issues with the thrower.

As William681 has stated blue chalk seems to be just like smoke you can use red or white. I get my paper from Staples copy dept. they have a Dayglo orange that they use for copys, you can buy a few sheets and it's close to the target orange. I use a glass the same size as the dome depression. Place 4 or 5 sheets together push the glass down hard and cut around it with and exacto knife. Use contact cement it drys very fast and will not wrinkle the paper.

Put a coat of cement around the edge of the paper you can go in about 3/8 of an in., while those are drying fill the indent on the top of the target with a teaspoon of chalk. Use the brush in the contact cement bottle to dab around the lip of the indent. By the time you finish 10 or so targets the first is dry enough to put the paper on. Remember this is contact cement and it sticks VERY well.

If you really want to make a great effect find an old down jacket of feather pillow and fill the bottom of the target with a big amount and seal the same way. These can only be placed on the bottom of each stack but they are very impressive and the guys love them, you think you dusted a live bird. Have fun, Bernie

Just to set the record straight - White Flyer offers "Orange Crushers" (Flash Targets) in both 110mm and 108mm - they are available from your WF distributors. Been available for the past 9 months. Used at The Grand American - Blue/Gray and USA Shooting's World Cup in Tucon, this past April.

That's an awesome idea for hand set traps for sporting clays.
